Microsoft: We created the iPod packaging parody

Well, here's one we didn't see coming. You may remember the video that was floating around a couple of weeks ago that poked fun at Microsoft by illustrating what the iPod's packaging might look like if Redmond were in charge. Well, according to this article at the iPod Observer, the video was created at Microsoft itself.

According to Microsoft spokesman Tom Pilla, the video was "...an internal-only video clip commissioned by our packaging [team] to humorously highlight the challenges we have faced RE: packaging and to educate marketers here about the pitfalls of packaging/branding."

Wow, so the folks at MS can make a joke, and a good one at that. I'm impressed.

I wonder if Ballmer threw around any office furniture when he learned that video was created within Microsoft. The video is funny, and very true. It is a perfect metaphor for how the company creates one simple products, but screws it up by making it do a thousand functions.

Speaking of Ballmer & Co., check out this history of Microsoft. Very funny.

Now that Tom Pilla has admitted to having a sense of humor, how long before Microsoft fires him?

There are bound to be factions within Microsoft who want more Apple-like, "boutique" packaging.

But at the end of the day, Microsoft has been VERY successful doing what it does, which is to develop kitchen-sink products that include every feature the buyer could ever want, name it with a descriptive name, box it with a wordy specification list, and sell it by the millions.

The Microsoft Intellimouse had this philosophy, and there are many Mac users here who bought one.

It's still funny, but even more sad now. Their packaging really is crap. I have a feeling that software there is designed in the same manner as the packages it goes into.

God Windows is garbage.

Every day when I get home from work, and sit down on my Mac, it's like I've been holding my breath all day and can finally inhale.
