WinXP on a Mac Contest is Over; Dual-Booting Success
It's over, folks, and the rumors, screenshots, and
videos all appear to be true. Windows XP will soon be able to be installed on several models of Intel Macs and you'll
be able to dual-boot between the two operating systems. From the contest site:Contest has been won - updates to follow shortly. All further donations will go into an account to sustain the open source project that will be launched with the initial solution.
"narf2006" and "blanka", the two programmers who claimed a few days ago to have cracked this nut, appear to have written their own bootloader which allows you to select which OS you want to boot from. Screenshots here.
MacRumors is reporting that the solution will soon be available for download and that it will work with the 17" and 20" iMacs, the MacBook Pro, and the new Mac mini.

March 18 2006 at 9:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe reasons are obvious. The Specs on the Intel Macs are very nice, and having a fully loaded XP running all of those Windows games will be great. Boot up OS X in the morning to do my work, and reboot to Windows in the evening for my gaming, and I only have to buy ONE machine!
Now if they can just find a good set of video drivers so that this would actually work. I'm in serious need of upgrading my Desktop PC this year, and the cost of that means I will not upgrade my Mac. SOOO, if this can really be made to work, and I can get a good high performance Mac to do both, I would give it a VERY serious consideration.
Yawn. Wake me up when CodeWeavers has Crossover Office running native on OS X. Who wants to reboot all day? All I need is to be able to run Outlook.. OS X does everything else...
March 17 2006 at 10:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI know many people who wont buy a mac because you cant play Counter Strike on it or some Windows-only software doesnt run on it. When this dualbooting starts to work properly, there are no excuses.
i have read the instructions and does it have to be xp pro?
am i the only one who thinks it's a little strange that narf's final project is so _attractive_? take a look at the video--the bootloader is stunning. it's fitting for the sleekness of osx, perhaps too much so? in a race to the finish for a 13k prize, with bambios and who knows who else breathing down their necks, narf and co took the time to create a really great looking gui? considering how wide a market just opened up for apple--one they probably didn't want to publicly approve of (why introduce a competing OS outright?) but which undoubtedly spells profits--as well as the stunning looks of the gui, isn't it possible apple had a hand in "narf"'s project? think about how easily this problem was solved, meanwhile osx86project.org getting neither the publicity nor the progress of the xp to apple project. just food for thought to any conspiracy theorists.
March 16 2006 at 6:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy not a new contest that would give a price to someone who does de XP just run well in a no-Mac PC?
March 16 2006 at 4:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have a question that might be a little bit rediculous, but why would some one want to dual boot windows? I understand the idea of wanting to use windows exclusive software, but why not buy or build a little computer for that specific perpose? It seems to me to be a better idea (Faster) then taking the time to switch OS on one machine. Honest question here.
March 16 2006 at 4:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywow you Mac fanboys must stop whining. the fact that you take the time out to bash something like this is rediculous. congrats to the winners and for those looking on a guide of instruction on how to do so, this link might be of help.
