Windows Vista delayed - again
I almost
decided not to post this on the grounds that a lot of us probably won't be surprised, but then I figured it might still
be good for a laugh.A friend passed me an article at CNET which reports that Vista has been delayed yet again to January 2007. Windows chief Jim Allchin explained that a few complications would force some PC vendors to wait until '07 to get their hands on the über-delayed upgrade to Microsoft's OS, while others could have it as soon as November 2006. As a result of this quirk, Microsoft ultimately decided to push the hold button again, kicking Vista's debut into January of 2007.
Here's hoping Apple will capitalize on this latest roadblock in Vista's development. With Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) still slated to land this year, along with the recent announcements of a new chip from Intel and WWDC's move to August (perhaps for a Leopard release?), I wouldn't be surprised if 2006 turns into a fantastic year for Apple.

They need to wait till WWDC so they can know what last minute features they can add to their promise list.

Has anyone heard any advance buzz on what new features Leopard may have? I need a reason to start looking forward to it. . .

And when it comes, the vast majority of the installed PCs won't be able to run it without either being upgraded or replaced. What a joke.

You always see these "I don't care if it is delayed, I want them to get it right" type posts on everything from software to hardware. How about getting it right, AND on time!? What a concept.

hmmmm......WWDC was pushed back 3 months from its usual June to August. then Vista gets pushed back 3 months from its original November.
Apple joke about Tiger as "Introducing Longhorn", it looks like Microsoft is thinking they might "Introduce Vista" to them as well.

I remember watching an episode of the computer chronicles which aired in Jan 2002. They did a review of XP and said that if you already owned windows 2000 you might be better off waiting for Longhorn which should be out sometime in 2003. Now they have set a date of Jan 2007 (maybe)! HAHAHAHA. Oh Microsoft you've given me a hernia I'm laughing so much.......

That picture's great! Waiting for Godot is the perfect parallel to Vista, all those Windows users frozen into inaction, it really is tragic comedy.

Does this mean that the part of Vista that was going to be introduced 6 months after the rest of Vista will now be introduced with Vista, or is that part of Vista being pushed back, too (WinFX file system)?
And to those who say "I don't care if it is delayed, I want them to get it right." Gee, that approach never worked in the past, what makes you think that it's going to work with this over-bloated piece of code?
I wonder what it's like to work for a company that is its own buzz kill.

SubGenius> "A new Finder, native cocoa not carbon"
Arrgghh! I thought this meme had died a long time ago. Carbon is just as much "native" as Cocoa.
Cocoa is a high-level framework, programmed in Objective-C.
Carbon is a lower-level API, programmed in C and C++.
Cocoa programmers often use Carbon calls. Carbon programmers often use toll-free bridges to Cocoa structures. Both are NATIVE.
The suckiness of the Finder has nothing to do with the framework used (which for the Finder I believe still contains PowerPlant code). It's because by necessity it contained a lot of legacy code from pre-OS X day, wasn't properly multithreaded, and never got the "crack team of optimizers" working on it that it sorely needed, and because Apple never hired John Siracusa to personally oversee efforts to Fix the F****** Finder!
