Google updates Gmail Notifier
Gmail Notifier, the little app from Google that... well, notifies you when you have new mail in your Gmail account,
has been updated. It sports a new
icon, auto updating, and it is now Universal. What more could you ask for?
Well, the ability to have it check more than one Gmail account to start with.

I'm just wondering, what is the difference between this notifier and just setting up gmail in your email program? I have Mail automatically check for new mail every 5 minutes, and it puts a little badge on the app icon in the dock, and I have Mail open hidden when I login automatically.
Without going to the gmail website, and without having to look at the google ads, and without the ugly 'windows-looking' web form buttons (why not aqua ones?).
It took me a while to get Quicksilver, but now I love it. Maybe this is something similar.

I'd like to see a feature like GmailStatus has that allows me to Command-G to open a browser window to gmail. Maybe there's a plug-in that does this.

What more could I ask for? How about support for multiple accounts! I have to use Gmail Notifier for one account and widget for another. I know what you're thinking: how could my life be any more difficult? I know it's not a big deal, but it seems like it should be an easy feature to add.

You know, you can just drag multiple Gmail widgets onto your dashboard and set each up for seperate accounts. I do this now for 2 accounts no problem.

Hi Scott. This tip of yours reminded me to finally download the AtoG tip you posted a couple of weeks back (http://www.tuaw.com/2006/03/08/move-your-contacts-to-gmail-with-a-to-g/). However, check out my reply (#8) and see if this is something you might want to investigate.
Thanks.

I love the Gmail Notifier because I don't use a mail client (along with many of my academic collegues). I prefer for Gmail to keep all of my mail on Google's servers so I have access to every piece of e-mail from any internet-connected computer. I agree that using Gmail Notifier with Mail (or any other machine-based e-mail client) is redundant, but for those of us who don't Notifier is just what we need.
As far as Google ads, they don't bother me. And I love how Google surfaces widgets for package tracking and maps if it recognizes any of the tell-tale signs that your e-mail contains this information.

hey LD,
no plug-in is needed to open your inbox in a new browser window. Just try opening the app again ... I use quicksilver and just type "GMAIL" enter and there I am.

Hi Amy, even if you use a mail client, Gmail will store all your email. Gmail's got free POP access so you can download a 'copy' of your email. That way, you can browse through and compose replies offline. Even after you download your mail into a client, when you log into Gmail on the web, all your mail, even the ones you sent out from your mail client, are there.
And, as you mentioned in your blog, the best part is drag-and-drop. If you use Apple Mail, drop anything you want to attach into the Mail icon in the dock and, voila! Instant attachment!
It's having the best of both worlds!

OR, yuo could just use Firefox and get the "Gmail Manager" extension which allows you to have as many Gmail accounts as you want.

My problem with this is that if you are logged into one account via Safari, it only reports that account. Regardless of what I put in the username/password area.

What more could you ask for? A better icon for one thing. They need to call in somebody from the Google Doodle Division. Talk about lame design!

JAYdee, if I wanted to type out the whole thing I would skip the4 middleman (Quicksilver) and simply type it in my browser which is always open. I want a simple keyboard shortcut like GmailStatus offers that immediately opens my default browser to my gmail inbox.

Sorry about that LD but i live inside quicksilver most of the time so typing gm enter there is usualy faster than going to my browser. You could however set up a trigger from Quickssilver, or the launcher of your choice and just point it at the Gmail Notifier.app. or at your gmail bookmark. My only real point is that you don't need a plugin to the Gmail Notifier to be able to get to your inbox in the same fashoin as you described with GmailStatus.

Does this version finally check your mail via HTTPS? It's kind of pointless to use a secure login to GMail if the notifier is sending my credentials in cleartext every X minutes.

There appear to be issues with Gmail Notifier.

Not sure if this is with Gmail+Growl or just Gmail Notifier alone. I use both and Gmail Notifier refuses to recognize new mail. Interesting, eh?

You can just set up a QuickSilver trigger for Cmd+G to open http://mail.google.com "On Press". I just set this up and it work perfectly just like GmailStatus used to.
