MacZOT fever spreading with MysteryZOTs
Remember
MacZOT, the bargain-a-day shareware site? It seems like it's
catching on as wildfire, as they now have a "MysteryZOT" offering that seems to be all the rage. A MysteryZOT
is a bundle of a few shareware apps for a ridiculously low price. The catch is that you have to place an order before
you get to find out what you're ordering.Sounds crazy? As of around 5 PM yesterday afternoon, over four hundred people would like to disagree with you, as this post at the MacZOT blog says they've sold 402 of the alloted 500 packages of yesterday's MysteryZOT. This morning I noticed they sold their entire lot and have revealed its contents, which includes iClip, the NotePad widget (with full search and print functionality) and the FTP Drop widget which offers a handy DnD (drag-n-drop) operation for sending files up to a directory on a server you specify.
At only $14.95 for these apps and three others (instead of $53.70), I'm starting to wonder if I missed out on a good deal. Did any of you TUAW readers jump on yesterday's MysteryZOT? Are you glad you did, or are you missing your $14.95?

I bought in, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. You can't argue that it's not a great deal...to everyone who is complaining that there were four widgets included in the deal: You got iClip and Menuet for less than the cost of iClip alone (which includes the upgrade to the forthcoming iClip 4, which will cost $29.99), so consider the widgets to be free. I will probably find some use for the widgets, but I'm much more excited about playing around with the other two programs.
It's a mystery bag. You have to expect the unexpected, and I think MacZot did a good job of providing a very good value.
I purchased both Zot's. The first one was plagued by a HORRIBLE turn around time for getting info on what the apps were and getting the registration info. In the end, the apps were worth it.
This second one makes sure that I will never buy another one. Their FAQ states they are helping sell software. I in no way consider a widget to be software. I don't even activate dashboard because it is such a memory hog on my laptop. I tried to give the widgets a chance.
The FTP widget will not interface with my directory, so it proves worthless. If I wanted such a thing anyway, I would just use the Transmit widget.
Statosphere is a poorly made version of the much better iStat Pro (which is free). I'm not sure there is a way to mess up the design and usability of this widget more than in its current form.
Notepad looks like it wants to be the OS X version of Hypercard. That's all well and good, but it has no place being in the dashboard.
Voice Notes has no export function I can find. It could be semi useful if it had that. Perhaps allowing me to directly export to my iPod. Otherwise I might as well use Notepad instead.
Menuet is a more expensive and less powerful option than Synergy which already resides on my system.
iClip could be okay. It probably won't replace Drop Drawers, but I'll give it a fair shot.
Summing up, I feel extremely ripped off paying for widgets. Even if I was going to pay for a widget I think the ceiling for me would be about $0.99 and even then I'd feel better using that money in the ITMS. In the end I won't use any of these apps or widgets for the long haul.
They warned potential buyers the Zots could be a bust. That's why I don't blame them, but I will not purchase another one and would highly reccommed others pass on them as well.
I wondered how they were going to make it very long offering 5 apps a week. I see now. They consider a widget an app so this will go a long way for them.
I bought it, and i kind of wish i didn't. I'm going to try to use iClip, but I already bought synergy for controlling iTunes so menuet was redundant (see: circular file) and the widgets are completely useless. For some reason I was really hoping appZapper would be in there, but that an illfounded hope. Seeing as people who bought the last mystery zot or the previous offerings of appZapper would have been bummed. But yeah, I'm bummed, and now I want to by NNW and don't have the cash.
March 23 2006 at 5:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi had just bought menuet two days prior, and was actually regretting that due its lack of customization (ie:being able to move it away from the menubar), and on a whim i bought the maczot special hoping i might get something truly useful, like appzapper. i too have disabled dashboard and eben though its about a half hour's pay, i kind of wish i spent it somewhere else. anybody want a menuet license cheap, or trade?
March 23 2006 at 5:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI also bought both and couldn't be happier about the whole thing. I really hadn't bought much software for my Powerbook (MS-Office, iLife '06 and .Mac) until now. Thanks to TUAW for turning me on to macZOT! in the first place a few weeks ago.
March 23 2006 at 4:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've picked up both Mystery Zots and been moderatly pleased with both (and will probably give a couple of the licenses to friends who might actually use some of the apps instead of me). Not real happy with the 4 widgets, but iClip was pretty nifty, as AppZapper was the main thing I was glad to get with the first one.
March 23 2006 at 2:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMacZOT is sweet, great apps once again in this MysteryZOT. The widgets are better than I thought. Great job, I'll be buying again :)
March 23 2006 at 1:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought the mysteryzot and i am very happy i did. I really dont care about the widgets but iclip and menuet are amazing. Totally worth my 15 bucks.
March 23 2006 at 1:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just jumped on this deal almost right away. I missed the first one and was sorry that I missed it. I am just like everyone else however...glad about iClip and Menuet, but 4 widgets? I use some widgets but decided when Tiger came out that I wouldn't pay for widgets, ever...
March 23 2006 at 1:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi didn't...because i pay for shareware. i have a sizeable arsenal of paid-for shareware applications, and mystery packages are not a deal for me because 1) there's a fair chance i already bought one or more of the applications, or 2) if i haven't bought it, there's a good chance i'll never use it.
but macZOT has had some really good deals, and i've already scooped up three of them. i look forward to seeing what they offer every day...often it's software i never knew existed. today i bought iScooper because it's $5 off, although i probably won't use the bundled Catalog software as according to many reviews it seems to be in the bottom of its class for speed and stability.
