Daring Fireball on "The iPod Juggernaut"
John Gruber
has published a glaringly well-written piece that
dissects the iPod's unstoppable success, why things are going so well and why analysts should simply remove the term
"iPod-killer" from their vocabulary. While it might be a bit lengthier than your typical "iPods are
great, Dell sucks" blog post, it is a wholly educational and darn solid argument worth every word. So head on over to Daring Fireball (click the Read link below) to find out why Apple can't make the same mistakes they made in the 80's, how Apple is out-innovating everyone despite their monopoly, and to hear an actually compelling case for why the iPod's competitors should just close shop - especially since one already has.

Yeah, thanks Jahi for reinforcing the "features no one cares about" point in the article. Been shilling long?
Card reader? Hmm. And the Wolverine dwarfs the iPod in size and probably offers horrific software integration. Not to mention you'll probably need that longer warranty.
Try again. Sheesh.
jahi did you even read the article? More features do not make an iPod killer. There's a pretty compelling argument if you take the time to read it...

First the first time ever, Apple has the superior product AND superior manufacturing costs due to volume. So while the competition may sputter about things like "voice recording" and "OGG support" (no one really cares), they can't proclaim a better product or a better price.
Now Apple really needs to turn its guns on increasing Mac market share. Now is the "critical juncture" Jobs mentioned. Apple is now has hardware-parity with the PC world due to the Intel switch. This change should ultimately help bring costs down. Their design is unquestionably superior. OS X is far ahead of Windows XP, and with the delay of Vista, plus the ability to boot Intel Macs into Windows if needed (the ultimate dangling carrot for reluctant switchers, though a virtualization scheme would be even better), the time has never been better for Apple to go all-out for market share. Lower the prices on the Mac minis to draw people in. Keep the prices on the iMacs and portables where they are and "upsell" new converts.
Now is the time, Apple. Go for it. Don't blow it this time.
