Just say no to Windows

After being bully about the prospect of Windows running on a Mac, Arik Hesseldahl, of BusinessWeek, is having w. He thinks that since Vista has been delayed (again) that now is the time for Apple to strike.

A new advertising campaign telling people about the Mac's security, switchers all over the place, and highlighting the fact that lots of what Microsoft is promising in Vista can already be found in OS X.

I agree with him, however, I disagree with one point he makes. He thinks that Apple should rush out Leopard, so that they can be even further ahead of Microsoft. Apple should focus on shipping high quality software, and not worry about rushing it out.

Don't worry. I bet Leopard will be out before Vista. I have faith. Just like George Michael and Limp Bizket.

So Bafendo, if someone can install windows on the new Powermac (Mac pro?) when it comes out you will switch to Linux? That makes sense.

I wont even bother with your other comment.

No, Apple should wait for M$ to release Vista.Last thing you want is Vista which will be delayed for another six months, giving enough time for Bill Gates to steal the Leopard features.I have heard that Outlook will be 'Windows Mail' and Widgets are going to be heavily used in Vi$ta :)

i'd be afraid that if apple rushed out leopard, windows would be trying to put leopard's features into vista like they're already doing with tiger.

There was a time when Apple may have delayed a release until they ironed out the major bugs of a piece of software - but that time is no longer. iLife 06 was shipped full of bugs - most of which have subsequently been fixed, but the bugs did not delay the release.
Apple is a computer company - they exist to make money for their shareholders, they have no greater purpose and they will ship Leopard when it makes commercial sense to do so, not when it is "finished".

Windows on Mac is a big mistake! Using one Hard Disk for Mac OS X and Windows is very very bad because if a virus, spyware and trogans infect the Windows partition your Mac partition will also be infected. Windows on Mac is a bad idea and I hope that Apple finds some way to stop this from happening on the Power Mac G5 when it's rebranded. If they don't I might switch to Linux. Finally I think if Mac OS X could be natively run on PCs Microsoft would lose a big market share. This would be due to people being able to install OS X on their current Computer instead of buying a middle to high end Mac!!!

The MacOS isn't perfect by a long shot, but by comparison to Windows it is far more conducive to productivity and causes less frustration and loss of time due to the OS "getting in the way" of the person trying to work on the computer.

Reputedly, Jobs originally implored the engineers of the early Macs to shave seconds off the boot up times. He said something to the effect of "...If we save 30 seconds on a restart then multiply that by X million users and you are saving years of productivity every day..."

Although that is a crude (and possibly inaccurate) example I think the ease of use philosophy still prevails at Apple as one of the main design principles, and let's hope it remains so. After all, the OS choices for computer buyers seem to be limited to crappo Windows and less than perfect Mac OS.

Just imagine if we had more than just these two choices, and that there was something out there even better then OSX right now. Even better than what Leopard or Tibbles the House Cat seems to promise. Personally, I'd switch in a second. It's not the hardware, it's the interface and the OS in general that matters.

It's actually remarkable that the Apple people perform so well given that their only real competition is that herd of complacent, unimaginative sheep up at Microsoft.

I have to say I disagree with Hesseldahl. Rushing Leopard is a bad idea, particularly if you're also planning on making claims about the superiority of the OS. The last thing you want is to film a bunch of ads that pointedly ridicule Microsoft for errors they've made, only to have one of your own errors jump up and bite you in the ass.

Comparison ads pretty much don't work anyway. Apple tried them back in the grim days of the 1990s. I remember reading multi-page insert ads in magazines, that described all the ways in which Macintosh was superior to Windows. There were head-to-head "set up your computer" ads. All these ads did was emphasize to consumers that Macintosh was the minority computing platform. When you're making point by point comparisons to the competition, it's because the competition is dominant. People subconsciously understand this when they see comparison ads.

Microsoft is getting bashed in the trade magazines and popular press for dropping the ball on Vista yet again. Apple should let them do that. In fact, I think Jobs has already focused Apple on making Dell its real enemy. It makes sense, actually. Apple makes money by shipping hardware, and their excellent software certainly makes that happen. Apple is still dependent on Microsoft for Office, and until there's a truly viable alternative to Office running on the Mac, attack ads against MS would probably do more harm than good.

Apple's approach with iPod advertising has been perfect. They entered an already crowded market, but they pretended that no competitors even existed. That's the approach Apple should continue to take with its Macintosh advertising. Let the computer magazines and blogs and Mossbergs of the world debate the technical merits. Don't get bogged down in negative comparisons. Seduce customers with great products and advertising that emphasizes their virtues.

Keep it clean, keep it simple, and ignore Microsoft altogether in the advertising.

I'm a converted "switcher" too. I love macs. I preach to my poor Windows friends to the point where they really aren't my friends anymore.

But I am truly happy that Microsoft decided NOT to rush Vista, despite the obvious pressure from the press and the OEM builders, and of course stockholders. This delay is actually a sign of integrity on their part. It would be more their style to release Vista now, and offer service pack after service pack.

Maybe, just maybe...they are taking quality seriously.

My mutual fund is tech heavy, Apple heavy and Microsoft heavy. I want them both to be successful. Then I can have more money afford new Macs after I retire!
