Apple introduces Boot Camp

In a bold move today, Apple has released a public beta of Boot Camp, a piece of technology that will be integrated with Leopard that is just for Intel Macs. Why is it so bold? Boot Camp allows you to dual boot Windows XP and OS X on any Intel Mac. The software even includes Mac specific drivers for networking, graphics, audio, Airport wireless, and bluetooth (amongst other things).
You can download the public beta right now (it checks in at 83MB).

Who wants to place bets that they were just being nice in letting that dual-boot contest run its course before they blew it out of the water with Boot Camp?

Best part on the page: "Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries."

What about virtualization in Leopard??

I'd be willing to bet that they would have waited to include this with Leopard or introduce it at the WWDC but the contest to dual boot encouraged them to put it out early.
I don't know about virtualization, honestly. If they did it, it would step on Microsoft's toes pretty hard since they're doing VPC, but I'd prefer it if Apple managed the product, I'm sure they'd do a better job.

Great news.
For myself I'm still hoping for speedy virtualization of individual applications, so you're not required to run the whole bulky OS with every security risk & all the maintenance that comes along with it.

I wonder if this fixes all the driver/heat issues people were having?

If Apple managed a fast user switch to a different OS that would be sorted. Market share would go through the roof

Do you hear that? That's the sound of Gateway, Dell, Sony, and HP's marketshare plummetting.
This is one of the biggest announcements to come out of Apple in a long time. I'm pumped.

why is this so "bold"? its not like they make any money at selling their "iApplications" and osx?

Wow! What a great move, and totally unexpected. Including native XP drivers for all the hardware is just fantastic.
I hear the call for virtualization, but the thing I want XP for - games - is better served by a native dual-boot. Honestly, I think this is really going to pull in some gamers out there.
