Apple is
seemingly telling us that it is OK to install Windows XP on our Macs with the release of Boot Camp. Does this mean that the years of Apple mocking Windows have
come to an end and there will finally be peace on earth? Not a chance.
You may not have noticed the following blurbs on the right hand column of the Boot Camp site:
'Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.'
And under the heading 'Word to the Wise':
'Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.'
Oh, Apple, you clever minx. You openly mock Window while at the same time enable it to run on Macs. This is why I am such a big fan of Apple.
Thanks to those who pointed this out.

hahaha I love it. I still do not see a clear reason to run windows on a mac. Between the BSOD and the "attacks that plague the Windows world" Windows is just FANTASTIC!!
I still prefer to keep them s-e-p-a-r-a-t-e. The phrase "call me old-fashioned" is slowly becoming old-fashioned.

I wonder how long until someone hacks Boot Camp so that it works with the various Linux distros out there.
What maybe 3 weeks?

13 of 16 posts today on Boot Camp.
13 IN A ROW!
That Apple 30th birthday non-event must have really messed with the TUAW blogers.

I definitely noticed the second statement. I think Apple does redeem themselves by giving you the option to set either OS as the default boot. I think Linux will come even faster. Apple has given you the bootloader Windows, I think Linux will slip in there easy.

What about Apple dissing PC's and Windows by calling them "dull boxed running dull little tasks..." Now with Boot Camp you can run these "dull little tasks" on an exciting computer???

i switched to a mac because windows is so horrible. i still have yet to find a reason for me to dual boot, and never plan on dual booting for as long as i am capable of using a computer.
a machine without expose and quicksilver? useless.
growl notifications? essential.
the beauty of mac os X? unmatched.
i dont need two mouse buttons. i have control click.
the command button does it all.
down with windows.

I think this is great! People will see that "word to the wise" and after getting repeatedly infected with spyware/adware/pop-ups/etc... they will eventually say "man...that word to the wise was right...screw this, Im just using OSX from now on!" Score for Apple (the computer company, not the Beatles music label)

I love the "stop hacking people - here you go", I love the "need a new machine but _have_ to use Windows?" angle, I love the "buy it for WIndows and try out the OS". However, I hate Windows and would rather have an iMac drop on my head than have one running Windows. Overall, a very crafty move from Apple - as long as OS X doesn't go the opposite way...

I believe you can run media center, BUT, you would have to take the 2 CD's and burn the contents onto a single disc because the eject button for the cd drive (located on the keyboard) does not work yet because of the lack of drivers for it. i think what you would have to do is take the 2 discs, burn disc one like normal, but put all of disc 2's contents into a folder which you would be able to navigate to when the setup asks you for disc 2

The last time I checked on this blog it seemed that this blog was blasting John C. Dvorak for saying Apple will move to windows. I belive they JUST did. So I think you guys owe an appology. Oh and i would be surprised that if by 20007/08 Mac OSX is gone for good.

There are definitely reasons I'd like to be able to use Windows on my Mac notebook. A lot of schools use crappy attendance and record keeping software that only runs on Windows. So, often teachers are forbidden to buy an Apple computer with the specious argument that "you won't be able to use the crummy PC software we're making you use". That's true even if teachers are versatile and very productive on their Macs. So, in my school, it'd make those few instances in a day or a week where I need to use windows a simple task and I get to keep my Apple notebook.

How funny it was to see a BSOD on a Mac. I didn't even notice those little blurbs on the site, but it's hilarious. I love how Apple hugs Windows with one arm and stabs them in the back with the other.

I'm familiar with that. I feel that windows is a BIG threat on the Mac in this form. Microsoft is a huge threat. Guys like me fought for twenty years to keep the MAc and MAC OS alive and safe from M$. Tho, at present, Mac OS is still the most stable and powerful of the two. When Vista comes out, we'll see. but this is now.
Has anyone thought of how this can effect software developers of Apple machines? I for one, Will use this "Boot Camp". But ONLY to play one or two games on. I'll put it on the level of my Microsoft Xbox sitting next to me now. I urge other Macolytes to do the same.
Do not become tempted to become dependant on windows. If you do, every thing you love about apple will go to the wayside.
