TUAW Poll: Will you dual-boot your Mac?

Now that it's easier than ever, will you dual-boot your Mac? By the time Leopard is available, this will be a piece of cake (can you imagine hopping from OS to OS as easily as Fast User Switching? A guy can dream). I know that it all depends on things like compatibility, ease etc. But all things being equal: What's your decision? Cast your vote in our poll below and check back tomorrow for the results.

Will you dual-boot your Mac?

i dont have MacIntosh yet and until today, i didnt know - windows have three good things - programs, programs and programs. and you cannot do anything with that. and paying 599$ is not so easy as it seems, especially if there are many programs only for Windows. now it's much easier for me to buy a new mac, thank you, Steve!

(and readers of TUAW, sorry for my bad iingliish)

Maybe, but probably not. I don't own XP, and I'm not about to go off and spend a few hundred dollars to buy a copy just for experimentation's sake. And I really don't have anything that only runs on Windows that I need, because I've been on a Mac for personal home use in one form or another since probably '99 or '01. Maybe if I find lots of disposable cash, I'll give it a try someday ... but for now, meh.

I'm not interested in running a buggy OS on expensive hardware, but what about running OS X on cheaper PC hardware? I remember some discussion about this when Apple first announced the switch to the Intel chip last year, and that running OS X on a PC wouldn't be sanctioned by Apple, and that hackers figured out how to do it, but what is the status these days? And why the double standard from Apple?

"(I fully acknowledge the lack of CAD software on OS X, but how many of us really use CAD software . . .)"

"how many of us..."? that's pretty bold of you, speaking for all the mac users of the world. i could say the same thing regarding gaming: "how many of use actually game on a computer?" i, for one, don't; that's what dedicated game consoles are for. back to the CAD thing, i'm a mac user, and i have a lot of colleagues who are mac users (and i'm sure there are many more in the world), and we design using programs that aren't available on mac. and yes, we would love the opportunity to run those programs on our macs, even if it means dual booting.

"Regarding the CAD software, has anyone heard of Vectorworks and SketchUp? They do more than an adequate job of replacing AutoCAD's bloatware. "

those programs are good, but they can't substitute for a program like SolidWorks. i think those who don't use CAD programs think that the people who do use CAD programs only use AutoCAD, which is not accurate at all. i've used Vectorworks and SketchUp, and they are great programs, but give me the ability to run SolidWorks, Rhino, and Mastercam on my mac, and i'm there.

Nope.
IMHO dual booting is a pretty stupid concept. You lose a lot of time just for booting this system, then that system - and time is the one thing people don't have too much of.
I need Windows quite often although I prefer my Mac OS, so I have my PowerBook and a PC running 24/7. No time for booting.
Hell, I turned my PowerBook off only once in the 48 weeks (thanks, CoconutBattery!) since I bought it, and that was because I went on a two day trip and forgot my charger. ;)

I would dual boot my MacBook Pro, but I am not spending $280 to buy Windows XP Pro, it isn't worth $50.

Dude! I'm NOT getting a Dull! now that I can dual boot or in the future run Windows in a window. To be clear, the ONLY reason I need to run Windows is because I am a software developer and need to test my finished apps. I dumped Windows last year and it's been great! :D

Not only WILL I --- but I HAVE --- and it's GREAT! Will use OSX 95% of the time, but there are a couple of windows only programs I need to be able to run, especially while travelling (like gotomypc to access my office computer) and my bike GPS software. This is just priceless!
