Found Footage: iAlertU

This video purports to be a demo of an early Alpha of iAlertU, the only way to make sure your Mac doesn't get 'jacked,' as the kids say.

It might be real (though I am skeptical) but it certainly is an amusing idea.

Thanks, Brandon Hays.

I had been experimenting with something very similar, but for my iBook. I noticed that iAlertU doesn't currently work for iBooks or Powerbooks so I tidied up my code, made a video and I have put it on my site along with the source.

I have a Toshiba Tablet PC with a motion sensor in it (for proper screen rotation) which has basically the same app installed by default.

It's definitely possible.

I have Undercover for my MacBook Pro. I can't say how well it works since nobody has tried to steal it but I don't notice it's existence after it's installed.

" If somebody just close it without changing the angle of the macbook's base - it would sleep. The alert will be turned off - grab it and run. Not very good protection."

There is another 'anti-theft' app available for Mac, Undercover: see http://www.orbicule.com/products/. The website's blog has a review of a stolen PB with Undercover, which was returned by whoever stole it. Looks promising...

Is there no way to override sleep activation when the lid is closed?

If so, this would make a great temporary protection device. It wouldn't be designed to allow your MBP to sit there for hours protected due to battery life. But, to go get a cup of coffee or something, it should work.

This is way too cool. Not a real protection though, but well that's kind of funny if you don't really want anybody to touch your laptop when you're eating or i don't know what.
Waiting for it... And the "bip" when (un)locked is way too cool :P

Now, if I just close the lid... and take the laptop afterwards it will just sleep silently. Also if someone takes your laptop and starts running.. the noise won't matter long. Unless you can run as fast following the sound until he closes the device :-)
