Solaris on an Intel iMac
The
OSes just keep on coming! The latest non-Apple OS to boot on an Intel Mac, thanks to Boot Camp, is Solaris. That's
right, a Sun engineer managed to get a build
of Solaris up and running on his Intel iMac. It isn't fully functional yet, but I have no doubt that it will be
soon.Macs are fast becoming the Swiss Army knives of computing.

Now, let's not kid ourselves. They're just starting to reach what a standard PC has always done, except they run Mac OS X.

System V and BSD based UNIXes via dual boot. Weird, through in Linux and you can have you very own *NIX OS flame war with yourself.

Swiss army knife? Are you kidding? You realize that every other computer has been capable of installing lots of OS's FOR A VERY LONG TIME, right? Apple's have been a bit late coming to the party... right?

Name one PC that can run OS X as well as Windows and Linux/Unix? That's right. There isn't one. So I would say that makes the Intel Macs the Swiss Army Knives of computing.

Oh, c'mon. How about those poor-hacker's Macs, built at Fry's? There is no difference between a Mac and a PC these days, except for a nicer case in the Mac. You can install OS X in a carefully built PC, there you have your army knife.
PC's have been running a plethora of OS's for a very long time. Just added OS X to the mix.

Let's not let this degenerate into PC vs Mac. Let's just be happy that the more operating systems that are booting on Intel Macs gives end user's more options and more incentive to check out the hardware. The more people that buy Apple hardware the more money Apple makes. It's that simple.

Andre, I'm interested, what are these poor-hacker's Macs, built at Fry's? Sounds like an interesting TUAW story.
Back on topic, the "swiss army knife" was obviously a throw away line, not intended to be taken TOO anal-retentively.
But he does have a point: in any given Silicon Valley Starbucks, if you see a computer on which the next groundbreaking Web 2.0 app is being hacked together, editing HD footage of the opening event, and kicking back for a bit of R&R with a FPS, chances are it will be a Mac laptop.
They and their users tend to be very versatile.

I'm running Tiger on a mac mini, an iBook...and an Asus barebones with an Asus board and a Celeron D 331. BTW, the Asus barebones runs 10.4.4 very smoothly.
