Apple, Portal Player parting ways
Portal
Player, the long time supplier of media chips for the iPod, has been told that Apple will be going with another vendor
for mid and high end, flash-based players (the shuffle and nano, presumably). This is bad news for Portal Player, as
the iPod has accounted for 90% of their revenue, EETimes reports. There's no word on who has won the newly available contract, but analyst Craig Berger of Webbush Morgan Securities listed Samsung, SigmaTel, Actions, or LSI Logic as possibilities, in that order. Sorry to hear it, PortalPlayer. I'll miss your smiling logo.

That's just the flash players - there's still the sizable business doing the disk-based iPods, at least for the time being.

They don't supply for the Shuffle, just the HDD and nano player.

Wow. Portal Player's stocks took a really big hit (down ~40-45%) because of this news:

I think it's time for a quick buy and sell of their shares!! After the panic goes away, and reality comes back!

at some point, portal player is going to have be able to survive without Apple. Now is the time for them to learn that lesson, I guess.

Maybe it just means new iPods that go beyond the Mp3 players that Portal Player helps with (and could could continue to help with). More Vpods.

Behold!!
Portal Player will strike back with vengence (maybe with a new partner this time) and Apple will be sorry for its decision.
