President Bush: US Government developed iPod

Oh, boy. Here's one for all you conspiracy theorists. In a speech delivered at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, President Bush addressed the American Initiative. During his address, the President said:

"The government funded research in microdrive storage, electrochemistry and signal compression. They did so for one reason: It turned out that those were the key ingredients for the development of the iPod. I tune into the iPod occasionally, you know..."

The President was joking, of course. When asked if he thought the joke was funny, Apple Board of Directors member Al Gore said, "No."

Gore never claimed that he "invented" the Internet, which implies that he engineered the technology. The invention occurred in the seventies and allowed scientists in the Defense Department to communicate with each other. In a March 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer, Gore said, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Which he did, in sponsoring legislation that made public the closed DoD network technology.

According to Vincent Cerf, a senior vice president with MCI Worldcom who's been called the Father of the Internet, "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator."

The inventor of the Mosaic Browser, Marc Andreesen, credits Gore with making his work possible. He received a federal grant through Gore's High Performance Computing Act. The University of Pennsylvania's Dave Ferber says that without Gore the Internet "would not be where it is today."

Joseph E. Traub, a computer science professor at Columbia University, claims that Gore "was perhaps the first political leader to grasp the importance of networking the country. Could we perhaps see an end to cheap shots from politicians and pundits about inventing the Internet?"

No, evidently not.

"W didn't invent terrorism, in fact he is the only president to really want to do something about it."

Yeah, you're right. Exactly how did he (and Rice really) respond to the Security Briefing with the title "Bin Laden Determined To Strike in the US"?

Yeah, thought so.

#18, don't confuse Afghanistan and Iraq, Iraq is about unfinished business for the Bush family and oil for the rest of the Haliburton crowd.

This is getting rather off topic, especially as just about every country has sponsored terrorism at some point.

14. We forget George Bush also invented terrorism!

Ahh.. what short memories we have. When Jimmy Carter allowed the Iranians to push around America for over 400 days, he set up everything that has happened since. W didn't invent terrorism, in fact he is the only president to really want to do something about it.

It somehow doesn't surprise me that Al Gore didn't find that funny. Does he find anything funny? He seems quite the humourless Jeremiah these days....
