Buy a new Mac and give Apple your old one

Today Apple announced a new computer take-back program starting in June. The idea is simple, when you buy a new Mac (via Apple's brick and mortar stores, or Apple.com) you will receive free shipping and disposal of your old computer.
The press release also tells us that Apple has a free recycling drop-ff point for computers and electronics on its Cupertino campus.

The equivalent to throwing away your old Apple after you get a new one. Most people aren't going to go for this.

I guess I should've specified: but most companies WILL unless they decide to pass their computers off to schools for educational purposes.

In other news the apple refurb shop shows a dramatic increase in stock. :)
If they significantly discount a new product when you return the old one ( obviously based on age and condition) then that would be cool. I can't see me returning my 2 yr old 17" PB when I upgrade to a 17" MBP.

Soooo... They're offering to throw away your old computer for you. How is this a "trade-in program?"

guys, come on. this is something they are doing to keep from catching heat from environmental groups. it is pretty well known there is some nastsy stuff inside your computer that is not very good for the planet. a number of other companies offer similar services. lets say you had a totally hosed broken monitor that you would not be able to sell or an out of warranty laptop that you broke badly and there was no way to fix. wouldn't you consider sending it in to get free shipping and a knowledge it might not sit in a landfill for 1,000 years?
hey, tomorrow IS earth day.

if they were offering discounts on new mac's by trading in an old one, that would be one thing. But this, my old mac isn't old enough to just toss it.

Will they still pay for shipping if you remove the various reusable components first, e.g. disk drive, CD-ROM, memory, expansion cards? If so, it's a good deal; better than setting it out on the curb for trash collection.

I'd only go through with this program if they gave me an exchange amount of money.

@ #5
you're on the right track, but this is in response to the environmental protests that happened at several stores a few weeks ago.

I can definitely say that like other people, once a Mac has joined my family, it never leaves. I still have my IIc and my IIsi.

Yes, but Scott, I'm suprised! As a local Philly resident you should know that Springboard Media is accepting trade ins on Intel Macs! $900 for an iMac G5! Not bad eh?
