Buy a new Mac and give Apple your old one

Today Apple announced a new computer take-back program starting in June. The idea is simple, when you buy a new Mac (via Apple's brick and mortar stores, or Apple.com) you will receive free shipping and disposal of your old computer.

The press release also tells us that Apple has a free recycling drop-ff point for computers and electronics on its Cupertino campus.

I think it is a good start, but still isn't enough. The point is (as #5 says), computers have a lot of nasty physical stuff inside them. A responsible manufacturer should not be entitled to sell a computer and then ignore the very real cost associated with recycling it. Who will pay this cost? It exists; it effects the environment - and in the end, us all.

I think it would be great if Apple expanded this program so that ANY apple computer could be returned, at any time - free.

I will be upgrading soon, and there's no way I'll be giving my old ibook back to apple for free ... but one day, when it is ridiculously outdated and of no practical use anymore, I would hope that it is recycled properly, rather than left in a landfill someplace ...

This would fit in with the EU waste recovery programmes regarding the responsiblity of the seller/manufactuer to recover and dispose of old equipment. Most companies now do this that opertate in the EU but does the US not have a similar legal requirement?

I'll still prefer MacResQ... since you get a nice check in the mail.

The ONLY way I would commit to this is if Apple created a web archive of everything received and schools and underdeveloped got first crack at being able to bring them into their computer labs and the like.

It would only be "dumb" if you were required to turn in your old mac when upgrading. No one is forcing you to do anything. There are actually movements in several states to charge you a TAX when purchasing a new computer. This tax would cover the cost of disposing of it when its dead and/or you're done with it.

Now, *I'm *certainly never going to THROW AWAY my aging G3 iBook, but I bet someone else has thrown away an aging G3 iBook.

Think of all the Windows machines that do get thrown away, or donated to Goodwill or other thrift stores, then think of alll the Windows boxes that get donated to Goodwill or other thrift stores that don't sell. What happens to those? Thermal Depolymerization? Not yet my friends.

Dear idiots,

They're doing you a favor by disposing of your old computer for free. If your computer still has value, don't send it.

Why do you need them to transfer stuff to your new computer? Is hooking up the damn firewire cable yourself and letting the setup assistant do it too taxing?

Why do you need an incentive?

This is dumb without some incentive like a discount off the new mac and that they would transfer all your stuff over to the new one.
