Apple Design Awards 2006 now accepting entries
"Show
off your latest feat of programming genius," says the Apple Developer Connection email announcing the call for
entries to their 11th annual Design Awards. Recognizing "technical excellence and outstanding achievement in
developing Mac OS X software," there are eight award categories into which developers can submit their apps: Best Mac OS X Developer Tool, Best Use of Mac
OS X Graphics, Best Widget, Automator Workflow, User Experience, Game, Scientific Computing Solution and Student
Product. As far as what winning developers receive for all their hard work, Apple's going all out this year. Each category winner receives two 15-inch MacBook Pros, two 23-inch Cinema Displays, an ADC Premiere Membership, a WWDC 2006 E-ticket, and an exhibitor space at Macworld 2007. The Student category winner will receive one 15-inch MacBook Pro, one 23-inch Cinema Display, one 60GB iPod, an ADC Student Membership, and a WWDC 2006 Student E-ticket. Does anyone else find it odd the non-student members don't receive an iPod? And how about the lack of PowerMac prizes?
The entry deadline is June 16th, and the winners will be honored at WWDC in August.

I just entered the Automator Workflow category. I created a workflow for automatically creating podcasts. It creates an AAC bookmarkable audio file and an iPod-ready video version (with any text or graphics you want overlayed) as well as generating the respective RSS feeds. It interfaces with iTunes U or any website. In addition, it can be scheduled in iCal so if a teacher wanted to record a class, it could easily be set up to record automatically at any given time. In addition, it can operate from a wireless laptop and upload to the same RSS feed as the classroom so a teacher is not limited to recording in the classroom. It is meant to be used in higher education for students to have an instant archive of all classes online. The best part is it operates on an out-of-the-box Mac. You saw it here first. Don't steal my idea!

The lack of Power Mac prizes is not at all odd, as by (or at) the WWDC Apple should have announced the Intel Conroe-based "Mac Pro."
But they can't announce a prize that will be "a future Mac which doesn't yet exist and even if it did we'd have to shoot you if we told you!"
I suppose the winners could sell one of the laptops to buy the new desktop after it is unveiled during the keynote...
Man, I'm going to have to dust off the ol' Logo Writer books and get in on these Design Awards ...
