Thorn lets us know, in the comments to the fast OS switching post, that
the folks at Parallels have released Beta 5 of their
Parallels Workstation 2.1 for Intel Macs. This is the software that lets you run 'virtual' machines on your Intel Macs
(including, but not limited to, Windows XP).So what's new in Beta 5? Lots:
- USB support
- Dynamic screen resolutions
- Transition cube when going into full screen mode
- lots of bug fixes

I, too, will be getting Parallels when I get an Intel Mac in my office.
When are people thinking the second rev of the Intel iMac will be out?

USB support, huh? Does that mean when I plug in my Treo and press the HotSync button, it will actually manage to detect the device before it times out and allow me to sync a couple Windows apps with my Palm? Because that'd be really cool. VPC supposedly does USB but it's so slow to work that it's useless.
This is going to be like the second thing I install on my iMac when it arrives thursday ;P

According to this post http://forum.parallels.com/thread1049.html only USB flash drives are supported (others *may* work but are unsupported).
I'm unable to mount the disk image for beta5 - anyone else having this trouble?

Parallels seems all well and good, but I can't help but think it's going to be totally obsoleted by something Apple has in store for Leopard.

At the moment, the download is crapping out after only 2.7 MB. That is why it won't mount, it's not all there. They may be getting hammered by requests for it.

I've been using Parallels since beta 1 and I'm very impressed with the product and the company--they've been responsive on the support boards and steadily improving the product, which is already stable enough that I'm using it all day to access our accounting system (Quickbooks Enterprise).

USB: mass-storage only and extremely inconsistent
Shared folders: dragged a doc from shared folder to Outlook window (hey, we use Exchange 5.5 with no IMAP connectivity so I really, really needed Parallels, otherwise I'd've used Entourage) and it dumped Parallels hard; tried it again (after virtual reboot) just to desktop and it was fine
The mouse is much smoother; video res switching much less "scary" than before.
It's really important to update the Parallels Tools in the VM after upgrading, though.

That's what I'm thinking. It seems like Parallels may be thinking the same --which would explain why it looks like they're throwing every resource they've got at generating buzz and getting the software out as soon as possible.

So I have a MacBook with Boot Camp and Windows XP installed on a separate partition. Can I use Parallels to launch XP in a windows straight from OS X? I installed it, but couldn't find a way to link it to my Windows partition.

I'm glad that I don't need a new machine just yet. I think I can hold off at least until the Leopard preview at WWDC, so I can see what it has in store, which will let me know if I really want to deal with Parallels.

Why is anyone waiting for the second rev of the _iMac_... ?
The MacBook Pro I can understand, with its heat and whine issues, but the iMac Core Duo is pretty near perfect already, and represents excellent value for money.
Just seems odd to me to be holding out for the second rev.
