TUAW Poll: The new Mac ads
We've all seen
the ads by now, so it's time to ask the question: What do you
think? Are the "Get a Mac" ads another example of Apple's quirky brilliance, or do the lack of specifics (OS,
processor speeds, etc.) leave you wanting? Take our poll below, and check back tomorrow for the results.

I like them, except for the ones that crash my mac. Esp. the "Restarting" one.

I understand those who want techie Mac ads, but they must remember that the majority of computer users are not propellerheads. These new ads are very "people oriented." Techie ads would be too scary for most people.

I think the ads are going to be very effective. They are geared towards the home user. Users with photos and movies to share. Users who keep paying to remove malware from their PCs. I love the ads!

You can have as many facts as you like in commercials, but the sad truth about advertising is that people go with what the ad makes them feel, no what it makes them think. Axe commercials make men feel horny, so they buy axe. The new Mac commercials make Macs look cool and PCs look frumpy, so I think they'll be damned effective.

They are nice and funny, but they actually don't do anything to showcase the mac itself. All you get to see of it is about 3 secs of a front view at the end of the commercial.
All the points it is trying to get across are slightly vague I think too. Take the virus one for example. They say the mac doesn't get Windows viruses but they don't actually point out that the mac is more secure, or that you don't need to deal with anti-virus software or that spyware isn't a problem either.

Are the ads making Safari crash for anyone else?

The HD iLife ad crashed my Safari while the tab was in the background, I was just listening to it.
And #1, Oh the irony

Matt:
While they don't showcase the mac itself much, just think about the last time a commercial for someone like Gateway or Dell, with swipes of the various products, actually did anything. Granted the design is nice and minimalistic, but you can only look at that for so long, after which it turns into a 'spew out technical facts' commercial, or a 'spew out fancy design specs and features people won't get.'
As for the vagueness, macs aren't that different technically anymore, and you can really toss any number of linux distros (or, erm, Wal-Mart's Lindows/Linspire PCs) on a pc and have similar abilities as far as stability, lack of spyware, minimal need for extra portection. Apple's trying to sell an attitude and experience, instead of falling back on the traditional computer jargon pitch, which has it's own issues (get too technical and you get people spouting how Unix-base != Unix enviroment, etc, keep it too simple and we get people saying the mac is childish and basic.) I kind of like Apple's choice of just ignoring both paths and personifying the systems, though it felt a bit odd at first (the virus one starts off the weakest, I feel) the set makes for an effective and friendly pitch. It's also specifically NOT itunes + ipod, and lacks the music video style that has become (predominantly) Apple's commercial base.

I think it reinforces the negative stereotype that PC users are zero-style nerds while Mac users are grungy Gen-Xers.

The networking one was by far the funniest. Especially when the "camera" called the "pc" a freak in Japanese.

When are we going to see a commercial made from straight full-motion screen captures (spiced up with some Motion work and a great soundtrack, of course) of OS X and various iLife apps in action? Don't TELL people Macs are better, SHOW them!
Wouldn't it be cool to see a commercial that started with the full-screen OS X desktop background and the dock (using magnification just for some pizzazz)?

Haha, I didn't notice that the first time. The camera chick says "Who is this? He looks like an otaku, doesn't he?" (otaku = geek, fanboy, etc.).
It is to laugh.
