Got files to transfer? Check out Yummy FTP

I keep a lot of backups safely tucked away on my online storage space. So, I spend a decent amount of time each weekend either in Terminal or Transmit. However, that doesn't mean I'm unwilling to check out alternate FTP clients. Yummy FTP looks pretty good.

It has support for both FTP and SFTP, automatic failure recovery, folder synchronization and more. What I really like are the "bookmarks." Basically, they're droplets that you can point to any directory in your online space. From there, you just drop a file you want transferred onto the bookmark and off it goes. Yummy FTP is good about asking if you want to make a new bookmark for new directories, as well as where you'd like them stored.* Other features include:
  • Easy scheduling setup
  • Can be scripted with Applescript
  • Remote editing with your favorite editor
Yummy FTP requires Mac OS 10.3 or later, and costs $25US for a single license. A fifteen day trial is available.

*Yes, I know that the current version of Transmit lets you create droplets as well, but I liked Yummy FTP's method.

I'm also a Cyberduck fan. I haven't noticed the slowness factor that Justin mentioned. When I'm evaluating software, I find something (preferably free) that fulfills all my needs well, and then I stop looking, so I hadn't even heard of YummyFTP. However...

My problem with Cyberduck -- the only problem -- is that it doesn't play nice with SSH-Agent for my SFTP connections, and I have yet to even get it to read my SSH private key correctly anyway. So, I suppose that with your recommendation, I'll be trying Yummy!

I've been a Yummy user for a while now. While I find the Transmit UI a bit nicer, Yummy has been considerably more reliable for me. I wrote a comparison of the two recently, but I'm really glad to see Yummy get some recognition here. It's a great application.

Here's my take:

Yeah for the most part CyberDuck is my FTP client of choice, it's a little buggy, but it has Growl support and that makes it the winner in my book.

Cyberduck is great and all, but MAN is it slow. And I'm running the Universal on a new MacBook Pro. I wish it were faster; it takes a long time to start up.

Yummy is way better than all of them. For a month I tested Transmit, Interarchy, and all the rest to execute a simple automated Apple Script to backup my iTunes Music folder to a remote FTP drive. None of the apps could get it right - except Yummy. Actually, Yummy did have one bug that prevented it from working correctly, but I contacted the company and a patch was sent to my in under 2 days. The problem with syncing Mac folders to a remote FTP destination is keeping the resource and data forks intact when you want to restore the file. Yummy was the best at doing this.

Just wrote a post about Cyberduck and wonder why Transmit gets all of the attention. I would rather give my 30 dollars to Cyberduck then Transmit. Certainly will check out Yummy FTP, but it will be hard to drag me from Cyberduck. I guess I'm just a sucker for the open solution.

Cyberduck has been my faithful FTP / SFTP friend for a while now. It's open source, kept up to date, and it's FREEWARE:

I've never really looked at Yummy FTP. I just thought Transmit was the best. But now I'm not so sure. Thanks for the post!
