Free domestic out calls with Skype
Speaking of free stuff, Skype has announced that you can now place free calls from Skype to a mobile or land line. It only lasts until the end of the year and it only covers calls in the US and Canada, but it is still very cool. Couple this with the Universal client and you're set to call people from your MacBook Pro willy nilly for the next few months. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

All I need is for this to come to the UK too - that would ROCK! Calls to UK, USA and Canada for nothing!

I've made three calls since receiving the email from Skype about this... one to California, one to Kansas, and another local... not a problem at all... may actually be enough to make me get rid of my cell phone and buy an account for voicemail...

Sadly, Skype advertised this service for US and Canadian consumers even when it didn't really work for most US users...

Looks like they are having some problems identifying IP addresses in the US. Lots of posts on forum.skype.com about it. Not surprising that most look like they have verizon as an ISP ( I do as well and can NOT make calls).

justintime24, you need to use the area code so for example +16102995230. This is how it worked for me, i live in the US.

I made a couple calls to Canada with it already and it worked fine for me. Sounded almost better than my land line!

This might be a tip for slow-witted people (like me) but I tried to dial without putting the plus sign (+) first. Once I did that, it worked fine.

it worked for me first try. Live in the us.
dial the + symbol, then the number 1 then the areacode and number with no spaces in between
i called my own cellphone, and a funky number with a 000 area code showed up on the caller ID.. but it worked.
