The Power Mac stands as the last PPC Mac
Oh, the poor Power Mac G5. Apple's "Big Kahuna" now looks downright elderly, being the only Mac that isn't sporting a rockin' Intel chip. I'm guessing that Apple's pro level machine won't make its Intel debut until January's Macworld Expo, but it's fun to speculate on what could be in store for that machine.Perhaps an all-new case design? Will the name "Power Mac" be replaced? Maybe an as-of-yet unreleased Intel processor(s) will power the beast. The mind boggles.
Have at it, TUAWers. Configure the successor to the Power Mac G5.

January 07 is out of the question given the Jobs promise/credibility factor. MacPro is very likely to be the name given recent trademarking. My only concern is that we are not looking at a later holiday '06 release to allow software compatibility issues to be worked out. August WWDC launch makes more sense - if only to begin orders and to fire up the pro community. That's how I'd do it, but hey - nobody asks me. I'm just sitting here salivating with my credit card drawn and poised. I also kinda dig #5's TMA-1 design...

Maybe 4 ghz if we are lucky. I remember Steve Jobs saying something about how dissapointed that the Power PC chips didn't reach 3 ghz even when they promised it would. Although it would be pretty cool if they put a three or four core chip in the succesor to the powermac. And since you can't really put a iSight in a power mac, how about in the apple cinema displays? Most powermac setups i have seen have an apple cinema display, so it would make sense to include it in the cinema display. And then mac minis could have a isight. And for the peopl e who put their macbooks and macbook pros plugged in at home to a monitor they can still video chat with the lid closed. i would like to see that from apple.

May 18 2006 at 8:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI reackon the Intel version of the PowerMac G5 will have to have a new case design. since it's current design is based around the chips and their cooling requirements (The heatsink is HUGE).
I have a dual 2.7Ghz model that will no doubt last me a couple of years yet, but I'd love to see the case shrink a good bit... and please let the fans be quieter!
Additionally, a couple more ports wouldn't go amiss, having three USB 2, one FireWire 400 and two FireWire 800 isn't too generous.
Cheers;

There is almost zero percent chance that the MacPro will slip beyond WWDC which is in August of this year. It is also highly unlikely that Apple will need to take additional time to redesign their chasis after Intel launches their new chips. You can bet your a$$ that Apple is not only well aware of the heat issues with the next generation Core Duos, but that they are also in posession of samples of them for testing their next line of machines.

I am not sure, but I was supposing that Core 2 is a 64 bit chip in a true sense, albeit extended intruction set, as opposed to Itanium, a _different_ 64 bit instruction set than x86.
May 18 2006 at 5:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMacStation Pro, that is my guess/hope. It gets at the sense that it's a Mac, removes the PowerPC connotation _and_ denotation of "Power Mac" (and yes, I understand that Power was used before the PPC was in the mac, ala orignal PowerBooks), and gives us a sense of the workstation quality of the machines.
Can we start a petition?
What about 'TowerMac' or 'Mac Box Pro' :P
May 18 2006 at 4:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI predict iMac Pro following the pattern:
MacBook, MacBook Pro
iMac, iMac Pro
I would love to see it named the Macintosh, such a nostalgic name.
I remember steve saying they wanted to put word "Mac" back in every hardware running OSX. It probably will be called the "Mac" , "Monster Mac" or "Mac Daddy"
