Nike + iPod interface in action

Cool Hunting managed to snag some pics of the Nike + iPod interface during the press conference, and it looks pretty nifty. They also got some photos of runners suited up with an iPod (and a thing in their shoes I imagine). Go check it out.

This is probably semantical more than anything else but why doesn't it say "Press select button to begin workout."? Every iPod owner know what the select button is. Using "center button," to me anyway, smacks of assuming ignorance.

O.K., now I want one that interfaces with my bicycle....

Well I think just saying 'select' button is confusing. The button is not labeled as such. 'Select' is also another action word. So 'Press' followed by 'Select' is a bit weird.

If this was GPS, sure.
But from the little info I am finding, it is one of those "we calculate distance from a stride you calibrate" things, right?

Any idea if the transmitter that goes in the shoe is pressure activated or motion activated? In other words, does it need to be under your foot (in a special nike shoe), or could you just slide it under the laces on the top of any shoe?

Can't wait to buy this. Very clever idea. And Nike will sell tons of sportswear and shoes from this.
But it would be even cooler if all the gadgets worked together. Like MIDI on synths. So that you could use a GPS from Garmin, a heart rate monitor from Polar, shoes from Asics, iPod from Apple and upload your to data to any site that supoorted the format.
We need a microformat for training data.

What do you think?

#5, acceleration sensors are cheaper[1] and easier to interface than GPS. They can be calibrated in the factory, and they could be very accurate if the assumption is that when you set your foot on the ground, it comes to a complete stop.

Can't wait to get my feet on one. I'll update the podcast if I do.

Also, it's quite hard to get a GPS positioned on the body so it can see enough satellites to get a good reading, especially for speed monitoring. You really need a sensor on top of your head, and that would just look silly!
However, there are GPS wristband type things and one of these days I'm going to get one and overlay my run into Google Maps...

Yeah it may be hard to position a GPS receiver on the body to get enough sats, but GPS would have so many more uses ... you could use it on bike, skates, car, whatever else you can think of. But shoes only? Useless if you ask me, none of the Nike shoes fit my feet properly, so screw that, I'm sticking to my trusty brand. I'd rather have comfortable shoes than ones that can count burned calories or peace (I usually go to the same trails so I know the distance already...)

Am I the only one annoyed by this spammer?

Mayo, you seem to be the only person left in America who hasn't read that Apple will also be selling a separate kit for non-Nike shoes.

I haven't read about Apple making a non-Nike version available. I suppose the sensor can be jammed into any shoe, but part of the experience is the online part at nikeplus.com.

Can it show km instead of miles? And WTF why is the US still in the dark ages not using metrics like the rest of the world.

Even if it's cool to hear some motivating tunes during your workout, how do you know what the 5 miles course is? TrailRunner is the next perfect addition. It's a workout route planner of Mac OS X that can export route directions as small NanoMaps onto the Nike+Apple iPod. For more information visit http://www.trailrunnerx.com/english.html
