Ask TUAW: Where do you put your Apple remote?

A time old phrase uttered countless times in countless living rooms across the world, usually accompanied by an expletive or two. Now that Apple has standardized Front Row and bundled a remote with nearly its whole range, Mac mini, MacBook and MacBook Pro owners are also screaming out for their lost "thingy", "zapper" and "remote control". iMac owners are in the clear: they've got a nice little magnetic section on the side of their machine that the Apple remote will elegantly stick to. Mac mini, MacBook and MacBook Pro owners aren't so fortunate. Apple's forgot to give us non-iMac owners a place to stash our remote! The MacBook, with its magnetic lid, offers a semi-viable solution. The remote will happily stick to the left and right corners at the top of the screen where the lid magnets are. It looks pretty stupid though.
One solution that Apple could use, for the MacBook Pro at least, is to adapt the Apple remote so that it will fit inside the laptop's ExpressCard slot. That would allow users to store the remote out of the way while the machine was closed (our less than elegant solution shown above doesn't tackle that problem). Have any TUAW readers come up with a way to keep the Apple remote with their Mac when they're not using it? Guides for Velcro mods, tractor beam construction manuals and levitation how-tos are welcome!

I really hope Apple reads these and makes a remote for the expresscard slot. There is already a BT rechargable mouse that fits in a PCMCIA slot. That sounds alot more complex than a remote. So it is feasible but maybe they are making us wait like they did for the BT mighty mouse. grr. My HP(work) laptop has a remote that lives in its expresscard/45 slot and pops out like toast in a toaster. It's very cool. I wish Apple would do this.

I modded my remote so I could wear it round my neck.

I keep mine between my cheeks. It's a nice safe place and the slim construction of the remote fits nice and tight without beeing too cumbersome when i sit down. I have to remember to take it out when i go for a dump but the fact is, it also reminds me to wash my hands before i leave. I just do my business and slip it right back inside. The gasses from my insides keep it sealed away from possible airborne viruses and bacteria and the smooth fleshy holster also keeps it from being scratched. I must admit it smells a bit when you actually use it but you get used to the smell after a while. My girlfriend finds it very sexy, she says it makes me more of a man to be able to do such things without being worried about what other people think. The other day, I blew a fart and my favorite podcast came on! I figured that if i lean to the left a bit the volume goes down and, to the right it goes back up (That's because i store it sideways instead of lengthwise..well, hope this information helped you all tackle your storage problems for yet another fine product from apple!

I have a theory as to how the IR beam manages to bounce of the screen and wrap around to the front of my 'book but it involves a shift in the earth's magnetic field and 30-40 computer-elves.
Ok, I'm sorry, but I have to comment on something non-remote related. All of you people are putting your remote in a DRAWER. "Draw" is something you do with a pen and pencil. "Drawer" is a place you store Apple remotes. I know, those pesky nouns and verbs always give me trouble too.

You could even carve out a book and put the magnet in the binding or behind the cover.
May 29 2006 at 1:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhy (if you have a MacBook) doesn't everyone just put the remote behind the screen when you are using the laptop but don't need the remote. I think it should hook on to the magnetic lid hatch through the cover. Like the picture except on the other side.
