Microsoft releases Mac specific wireless laser desktop

That's right folks, our good friends in Redmond have produced their first keyboard ever without a Windows key. Instead you'll find command, control, and option buttons on this new wireless set from Microsoft made specifically for the Mac. It also features hot keys that are programed to open iTunes and iPhoto (amongst other programs). The mouse features a zoom slider and 4 way scrolling.

The Wireless Laser Desktop for Mac will be available this summer for $99.99.

I have read all of the comments in this forum about this keyboard/mouse combo, and what I have concluded, is that most of you have not even TRIED this keyboard. You are basing your "0" rating based on the "bloated" appearance or that it is made by Microsoft.
It would be great if those of you with little or no hands-on experience with a product, keep your editorial comments to yourself. It would make it alot easier for folks to make an informed decision, based on facts.

Personally, I applaud Microsoft for stepping up to the plate. Do you see Apple making ANY ergonomic hardware? Just look at the Apple mouse; One button and a very odd, but "stylish" shape that is anything BUT ergonomic. And where is the Apple ergo keyboard... cordless or wired? So before blasting Microsoft for making something that works for MAC exclusively... look at the Apple mouth we have all been blindly feeding, basing it on the false idea that they are the "better" company. How much money does Steve Jobbs donate to Charities? If you imagine Apple is other than a company out to make money (and lots of it), take a closer look.

Put your money where your mouth is folks, and please start rating things you have personal experience with.

Personally, I bought this very keyboard/mouse setup, but not MAC specific. I was hoping it would work with my new iMac, but it didn't. I loved how it felt and responded. The 4 way scrolling mouse is comfortable and very easy to use. Much easier than the tiny little rollerball, one button mouse that came with my overpriced imac.

The keyboard felt very comfortable (for those of us who are used to ergo keyboards). It didn't feel "bloated" at all, but in reality, ergo keyboards tend to have that shape... that's why they're "ergo" not because they're made by Microsoft!

I will most likely end up trying this MAC formatted keyboard, and I will write an INFORMED review, for those who want more than a knee-jerk opinion.

Thanks

Paul

I've used a Microsoft wireless keyboard (not Mac-ified, but configurable to behave like a Mac with Command key next to the spacebar) and mouse for a couple of years, and love it; especially the ergonomic layout (which the new keyboard does not have). Those large delete keys are handy; when I have to use an Apple keyboard I find myself hitting F12 or by mistake all the time. And those "extra keys" come in handy for a keyboard shortcut nut like me. I applaud Microsoft for this acknowledgment of the Mac marketplace! I will probably buy one of these when I get my Macbook Pro later this year (with an external monitor also).

But I agree that bluetooth would be preferable to the USB doohickey that just adds clutter to my peripherals shelf.

Looks like they've just changed the special keys on the PC product (about $60 @ Costco), which works very well with Macs already. The little slider to the left of the Tab and Caps Lock keys is set to adjust the font size in Safari. Very handy when you use an HDTV as the monitor and you're sitting 15 feet from it. Like the Mighty Mouse, navigating left and right with the wheel is a big plus.

Bluetooth isn't the same as serial, it's constrained to what the profile describes. So all of the keyboards with special functions on them use their own protocol, not just MS. If you're waiting for a keyboard and mouse with all of the bells and whistles, via Bluetooth, you're waiting in vain.

seems kind of ironic to me that they boast of their ergonomic keyboard and then make a right-hand only mouse.

The thing that i dont like about that Logictech cordless desktop is that it takes up an usb port. I dunno about you, but i still prefer Apple's bluetooth keyboard + mouse xD
