Apple recycling program begins

We wrote about Apple's recycling program when it was first announced, and now it is in full effect, yo. All you have to do is buy a new Mac and then you can participate in the program. You either get an email (if you purchased your Mac from the online Apple store), or you'll get asked if you want to participate at the store. You'll then get an email with instructions. Pack up your old computer (Mac or PC), take it to a FedEx location (with that email you got) and that is all!

So I've got to pack it up myself? I don't know about that, seems like selling on Craigslist is the way to go. Plus that way it helps me pay for my new machine.

I also would like to know how the credit system works. Do they quote you a price ahead of time?

Recycling? and we are just giving it away? I rather give it to salvation army or something else so it can benefit society rather than give more money to a corporation.

Here in Berkeley we have a great resource, accrc.org, that tries to repurpose the computer to non-profits, schools, or economically or physically disadvantaged individuals. Often our old computers are better than what these schools or individuals are using.
I don't see any provisions in the Apple recycling program for Re-Using. They have made a great step, but I think we should all try to repurpose our computers. It helps bridge the "digital divide" and strengthens our economies and schools when more people have the technology skills to thrive in today's workplace.
