Disk Order - an advanced Finder replacement

Disk Order is another app that takes a stab at replacing the Finder, but doesn't seem to take things quite as overboard as PathFinder. With tabbed file browser windows, built-in FTP client, command line tools and more, Disk Order should have a few things to offer anyone who feels like the Finder is the ugly duckling of Mac OS X.
A full-featured demo of Disk Order is available, while a license costs $22.57.

VERY ugly. No icon consistency, too many buttons.

Exactly my thoughts kevin...
Sadly I will not install this software simply due to the fact that's it's ugly. I dunno why developers even both with brushed metal anymore at all. Apple don't so why should anyone else.

It looks like you can run Starship Enterprise from it.

I don't generally spend a lot of time in the Finder itself, so a replacement app would have to offer me some serious features I NEED as well as correct what I perceive to be flaws or bugs in the Finder. So far, there's not one that does this. I've tried using apps like PathFinder, but they just don't work well for me. I'll give this a shot, but I doubt it'll work for me either. I like the free-form approach the actual Finder takes.
As for its appearance, you could always use Uno to remove the brushed metal texture if it offends your delicate sensibilities. That's what I've done. Unified isn't quite as nice to look at as Platinum (IMO), but it's better than brushed metal.

Ugliness aside, this reminds me of Directory Opus for the Amiga. It also came out for other systems including the PC. I like being able to access two separate directories from one window. Plus the tabbing makes it even better as you can have multiple sources.
Here is hoping they can give it a make over. :D

Ugly? Maybe.
But, the target customers for this app are dual-pane, file manager addicts/power users; we normally don't care as much about aesthetics.

Indeed. Reminds me of Midnight Commander (and other dual-pane file managers terminal or otherwise)... which are also ugly as sin.

Sorry, I'm still all about PathFinder. Offers a lot of what this does (and plenty it doesn't), but far, far more elegantly -- you can hide the extra buttons and keep it quite clean.

It's not perfect, but it's a big step forward from Finder, and if you give it some time I think you'll grow to love it. (You can also disable its default brushed aluminum -- ewww.)

Please correct the news article: there's no link to the Disk Order's URL (only to Path Finder's). Feel free to delete my post after correcting the problem.

why do all these finder replacements look like they've been trying to put every friggin function in one UI window? didn't they ever hear about simplicity?
I never got what is so wrong about the current finder anyway...

That is a new app called FireRun, which should be released very soon. IMO it looks so much nicer than this other thing posted here. But we'll see how it functions once it is released.

Oops, I made an error. The app is called FileRun.

1. I like the double pane. More intuitive to use than PathFinder (for me). And, I use PF a lot.
2. I don't like the truncated names in the disk icons.
3. I won't buy it because they have no support forum on their website.

FileRun looks like the Poo! I like the iTunes-ish breadcrumbs, consolidated activities window, and the ability to restore files to their original directories.
About that last one: Why the hell did Apple remove this feature from OSX, and why the Hell haven't they put it back in? I've been able to restore files with Command-Y since at least System 6.

"...Disk Order should have a few things to offer anyone who feels like the Finder is the ugly duckling of Mac OS X."
did you just call Finder the ugly duckling in this case?

until there is a windows-explorer-like tree navigation pane, I'll stick with the Finder

I cut my teeth learning Windows and Mac OSX on Norton Commander (DOS version), then I found Total Commander, a windows version. Unfortunately there isn't a product similar to Total Commander for Mac, Disk Order comes close.
I like a number of techos like the two pane panel as a file manager. I find the tree-branch structure a pain in the neck to navigate.
I guess its just what we're use to aye?!
