GameRanger to drop OS 9 support, eventually
Inside Mac Games reports that GameRanger, the online Mac gaming service, will stop supporting booting GameRanger client in OS 9 at some point this year. This should surprise no one since OS 9 hasn't been commercially available for years. Now, for you game crazy OS 9 holdouts, fear not. The client will still run in Classic (which itself isn't supported on newer Macs, but lucky there are solutions for that).I'm curious, how many TUAW readers are still using OS 9? Do you have plans to upgrade any time soon?

To heck with all of you. I still boot up my IIe and it's Karateka for me baby! I see no reason to move on to another computer let alone a operating system. I got what I want and I am sticking to it. I mean I already went through the Apple, then Apple II, then Apple II+ upgrades! How much do you think I can take!!!

I asked why people were still using OS 9. Most people said they had old hardware that would only interface with OS 9 or custom software that they could not find a replacement for, and could not live without.
A few also mentioned old OS 9 games that they simply love.

I use OS 9.0 on my 933 Quicksilver for music. I have Cubase SE for OSX but it just doesn't run as efficiently as Cubase on OS9.
I also use Metasynth and Vocalwriter, neither of which are available on OSX yet. Not to mention all the plugins I've gathered over the years.
For the record, I also use 10.4.7 on the same machine - and get this - I still use OS8.6 on my Beige 266 MHz G3.
@#8, I really dont mind because 99% of it sucks ass, and the other 1% is stuff I already have done or found a way to do in OS 9. so I come here to see how the X world has finally caught up to me and my OS 9 friends.

for voice communication and hosting chat rooms.
Gameranger logs your mac address and god knows what else, when they block your gameranger account #, they block mac address, and ip. If you have 3rd party voice sofware running on your computer to bypass gr voice if your not premium, you can join game room but when you want to start the game from the gameroom your in, you cant join the game. Gameranger is a communist program cant do anything, can't say anything, i suspect them to filter chats also for keywords, Dont say sensible words in Public rooms you get kicked, say sensible words in private chats you don't get kicked/ban but im sure you get flaged. I just wish someone intelligent will program another gameserver application, mac and pc compatible. Now that i dont go on Gameranger anymore i have more time to read TUAW, i read it 3 times a day.
here a little picture of the owner http://planetgameranger.com/1
here is the url of the little group who i think moderate gr and likes to race "Who is more popular"

SanitarySal the garbage man's Pal. said:" I just realized after playing Americas Army for the past 6 months that I am banned from GameRanger. That is fine with me, because I think gameranger sucks anyway. What is my problem with gameranger?
1 - Scott Keevil creates spyware, that steals information from the the Mac in which it is installed and reports it back to Gameranger? Information such as your name, Mac login, your computers serial number and your ethernet card number among other things.
2 - I don't like how gameranger autoupdates without my permission. It is the only Mac software I know that does this. A practice which is widely condemned by devlopers.
3 - Scott uses the information he steals without without your knowledge to permenantly ban users. Instead of just banning your IP address, he bans your ethernet card address which is reported with the spyware.
4 - To maintain a good rapport with the Software companies Scott Keevil reports the personal identity information he stole from your Mac as well as the other information you gave GR when you registered to the Software companies he writes plug-ins for. *If you (like me) value your privacy on the internet, this might upset you.
5 - Scott Keevil is a beggar, who extorts his clients to give money to support his spyware business.
6 - Gameranger itself is not much more than a glorified IRC client. The real GEM about gameranger is the Mac community that uses comes together, provides servers, community tech support etc... The guys hosting the servers are the ones we really should be donating to.
In conclusion, I'm not trying to talk GameRanger users out of using the client. I 'm not trying to talk the premium users out of paying for the service. I never will. But what I am suggesting is that those of us who do dislike Game ranger (and apparently there are quite a few) think up some alternatives. Alternatives like
1 - posting server IPS in a message board
2 - creating and maintaining an IRC chat room where server IPs can be posted.
3 - Instead of donating to gameranger, we could donate to a server(s) to host popular games on a t1 or faster internet connection.
etc... etc...
iamdigitalman has to be a spoof. That's some funny stuff. It's got to kill you that a site you frequent talks about software, tips and products daily that don't work with your computer.

I use OS 9 BY CHOISE every single frickin day, and love it. cant live without it. you show me one good reason to pay $129 for a piece of software that I already have that does everything I need, plus a slower computer to boot, and you let me know why that's a good idea, and I still wont go X.
and yes, I read this blog EVERY day. so you shut your pie hole, good sir.
Am I the only one who thinks GameRanger is a pain ? Gameranger is one of the reasons I dual boot my Intel mac to play games.
It's just a mac sect with a few dozen peoples around making mac gaming look... well, so lame. Oh, I remember buying Age of Mythology with my first mac, thinking I would be able to play with the thousands other people playing it on PC, like I did before... just to find myself with about 15 other people, most of them just chatting and not interested in playing.
While the idea to have a common chat/game system for several games might sound great it is not because:
- It's mac only . Simply not enough people for most games, while the PC equivalents are full of people. You play the same game, but only with mac people. While for other games like StarCraft or Warcraft you can very well play with people on different platforms.
- It's not well integrated in the games. You have to exit the game application and switch back to that desktop app to meet people. Most of the time, between the moment you found a team and the moment you are in the game, you have lost half of your partners. And this is an optimistic view, in my experience, it was nearly every time.
Sorry.. just had to go on with my little rant. Maybe it is a enjoyable experience with some other games, but this AOM thing just turned me mad.
Hmmm... your banner ads now have sound.... how charming.
Maybe you guys should do something about that before readers start shunning TUAW.
