Mount a Box.net account on a Mac

Box.net is an iDisk-like service that allows you to mount an 'internet hard drive' on your desktop (they offer both free and paid accounts). Great for easily and securely backing up, syncing and sharing files between computers. Previously, they apparently only offered a client for PCs, but UNEASYsilence has published a simple tip for logging in and mounting your Box.net account on your Mac OS X desktop - no extra software necessary. Using the simple power of the Go > Connect to Server menu from the Finder, you too can have your very own WebDAV online hard drive. 1 GB is free, while 5 GB is $4.99/month, and 15 go for $9.99/month. Enjoy.

1GB for free?!
c'mon Apple - give away 1GB with every registered Mac!

This so simple, just like WebDAV. You know, you can easily set up a WebDAV Server ion your own Mac? It`s all built into the Apache Web Server.

WinnetouKoslowski:
Perhaps someone can write up a tutorial for that?

Simple and cheap are good qualities, but any word (good or bad) on security?

Uhm...does this not work on 10.3 or something? It doesn't even give me a log in option.
Is anyone else getting an 'error-36' when they try this?!

If you used Apache on this server, and had domain that linked you to the server, could this be used with iWeb?

I signed up for this service a month or so ago as I decided the $139AUD for .Mac is not worth it. Box.net works great as an iDisk replacement. Especially now with this handy tip!

Wow is all I can say. Let's hope it sticks around. Took less than 2 minutes to sign up and have the Network drive on my desktop.

There is an automator action to correct the fact that uploads won't appear in your webdav volume if the files have spaces in their names. Not as great as plain drag-n-dropping, though :-(

From the comments to this post:

Here is the automator action:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/makenameswebfriendly.html
You can also modify the action so that it connects automatically to your webdav server and upload the files there. By saving the action as a finder plug-in, you can then upload files through the finder right-click menu.

They say that you can't upload any file larger than 10MB unless you pay for an upgrade. That makes it pretty much worthless.

But then again, uploading anything of substantial size (say, 100 MB) on iDisk usually results in a day at the beach...
