The U2 iPod makes a 5th generation encore

Apple has re-released the U2 iPod in the form of a red and black 5G iPod with video. The new U2 iPod features one design element to differentiate it from the normal 5G iPod and the previous U2 iPod: "an all-black stainless steel enclosure" or (as a subtitle underneath a picture of the U2 iPod mentions) a rear featuring "striking black metal." The screenshots of the new U2 iPod on Apple's site don't show the black metal very clearly thanks to the black background, so we'll have to wait for some hands-on pictures for a "yay or nay" design critique. Fingers crossed it doesn't scratch as easily as, well, every other iPod ever made.

Another bonus over the normal iPod is the inclusion of an iTunes coupon that lets U2 iPod owners download an exclusive video featuring music and interviews with the Irish rock band. Pricing is $329 ($30 more than a vanilla iPod) and shipping is currently "within 24 hours."

Update: check out the Quicktime VR movie at the bottom of this page ("take the U2 iPod for a spin") for a better look at the black metal enclosure. Without the U2 signatures and the red scroll wheel (i.e. on a normal, black 5G iPod) it'd look great!

[Thanks, Robert]

Does anyone else feel that Apple may be planning to replace the current nanos with an all black version by the end of the year? I mean with them giving away free nanos with a mac for students, it reminds me of when they did the same thing last summer but with iPod minis which were then discontinued to be replaced by the nano?

Hey #3-NNTPGrip U2 doesn't get any money from this as they said the first time around. I think it is Apple that is trying to milk the popularity of U2(Who by the way are very wonderful musicians!) I have heard of people not being great fans and then have gone to one of the concerts and have changed their minds. I went to two of them and they were something else live I must say!
My qualm is with Apple. I have the second u2 ipod that has the color and I love it, thought it to be very unique and special. Even though the nano came out right after,I told myself that, hey,at least I have this cool one. But of course they arent happy, they have to do another one with more bells and whistles and of course the first response it"I must have that one also."
So don't take it out on my little sonic leprichaun buddy. He can come to my house anyday and sing incorrect spanish numbers to me.
On the 666 thing. The real history that I read about that number is untrue. The real symbol for the devil is 616. The aritcle I read pretty much said that 666 rolls off the tounge easier,so it got mis-used a long time ago.

U2 is bad enough, don't even bring Pearl Jam into this.

I love it when comments get completely off topic like this, it's the best!

"It's a beautiful day...
If you sing this song you're gay!"

Loved the crack about the Slayer iPod on 6/6/6 with a pentagram, that was great.

Apple does realize that there are better bands out there, right?

I'm still waiting for the commemorative Dead Milkmen iPod with the cow logo etched out on the scroll wheel. That would be uber cool.

I dont see what's everyone getting so worked up about; you could order a black iPod with a red scrollwheel for quite some time now from Colorware...

Seriously; http://www.colorwarepc.com/products/select_video_combo.aspx?GB=30 Choose the jet black body and the ferrari scrollwheel; do you see a difference? - I dont; and I couldnt care less that theres some signatures on the back.. :p

I've been hoping for a (PRODUCT)RED iPod myself:

17. ...I remember rumors regarding a 'red' iPod.

I would think that Apple would benefit from the association. And a shiny red iPod would be cool.

I'm not a big fan of U2 but Bono is a very admirable person. I think apple deserves credit for giving recognition to a band with an excellent humanitarian track record.

In response to the comments on the Spanish at the begining of Vertigo. Bono says unos, refering to the band as being one, and he says catorce because How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was U2's
14th album. Besides, who even cares that it'f for U2, that red click wheel looks so sweet.
