iMix of OS X startup music
I enjoy installing OS X and starting Macs up for the first time because of the lovely little welcome movies that Apple includes with OS X (Microsoft, you really should add one of these to Vista). How many times have people asked TUAW, 'hey, what song plays during the initial startup of Tiger?' Many times. Now, we can point them to this iMix on the iTunes Music Store which includes the songs that play during the welcome screen of each major rev of OS X.

Is there something wrong with me that I cannot remember ever hearing any of these songs? Particularly the one for Tiger, which was the most recent! Oh well, Royksopp sounds pretty cool so I might have to check them out more.

Eple is such a great song, and Melody AM is a great album.

Ka-ching! That's cool to have on my iPod...almost as fun as having all the iPod commercials on my video iPod.

On that subject, on iTunes Canada there's an iMix that has music for all the iPod ads that the Canadian store made available, all the way up to the "Love Train" ad.
Just search for "iPod Ads" in the iMixes and you'll find it (it's the May 2006 one).

#1, Yeah, none of these I remember hearing, I've heard Tiger and Panther, I don't think these are the install songs.

The song for Tiger, which the iMic says is "Bytecry", does sound like the one Apple used for Tiger. You may not hear it because of the words...ignore the words, and it's the same.
The Tiger and Panther songs are pretty cool, I think.

In reply to the post:
I think XP already has a start-up vdeo, it's not nearly as universally welcoming as OS X's video (though it has swishing colors), maybe they'll spice up Vista's a bit. Also, I think it was kind of slow frame-wise, either that or I was installing it on a particularly old computer. Hmm... I wonder if i can access the OS X video from the install discs, been a while since I saw it.

Does anyone know if the actual install movies are online anyplace? I would love to put them on my iPod.

I would recommend Royksopp, their music is, to me anyway, some of the best that I've heard in the genre.
An interesting story about Royksopp, the year I was introduced to them through my roommate, the student org I volunteered at ordered a bunch of G5s. How surprised I was to hear them all playing Eple as they booted. Made me think of how small the world really is.

The welcome movie can be found on your Mac.

It's separated into two files, audio and video.

As it's said by #12, it can be found on your Mac if you have 10.4 or 10.3 following this tutorial.

i wanna see a little hack/app that'll let you have a startup song of choice while your mac boots. it would be a more interesting bootup.

As a curiosity, Royksopp is a Norwegian band and the name 'Eple' is Norwegian for Apple.
