Shake 4.1

Today Apple has announced that Shake 4.1 is available. This .1 release marks Shake's entrance into Universal Binary status, and Apple says that it really flies on Intel Macs (how about an Intel Power Mac, Apple?). That's not all though, Apple also decided that the $3000 price tag for this program was a bit much, so they chopped it down to $499 which should make Indie film makers hearts beat a little faster.
Existing Shake customers can get the upgrade for $49.
Update: A few people have pointed out that according to the Shake FAQ you can still get Shake for Linux but it'll cost you $3000. That's right, the price drop is for the Mac version only, so I suggest all you Linux Shake users pay the Mac version and use the remaining $2500 to pick yourself up a Mac.

That price drop is amazing.
It's just the first step leading to Shake's eventual EOL. Can anyone say Final Cut Extreme?

Yeah, wow. That is a huge price drop. I feel sorry for anyone that bought it really recently, they must be fuming and will probably demand a refund.

If you guys go outside, and listen carefully, you can very faintly hear the people that puchased this program in the last six months, screaming in agony.

Appears the price drop hasn't made it as far as the UK store just yet.

Are there any new features with 4.1 or is it just UB compatibility?

It is VERY interresting that the price-drop is for Macs only.
Quote from Shake FAQ:
"Is Shake still available on Linux?
Yes, Shake 4.1 for Linux is available through shake-sales@apple.com. Pricing has not changed for Linux."
For $3000, one could buy a screamer Mac workstation AND Shake. This price cut could just as easily be pushed as a "buy Shake and get a Mac free" campaign.
Apple is quickly becoming a dominant force in creative tools, with all their software putting the Mac in a very cushy position.

What makes me laugh is that they was going to stick to that price tag, what would have happened if they did not drop it then found out yrs later that they have been ripping us off, i cant see how they wents from $3000 to $499 thats $2501 difference sorry but that is all weird to me.

MacRumors is reporting that this is the last version of Shake that will be delievered, in lieu of a new application due sometime in 2008.

That's $290 educational in Canada. Wow. It's really too bad I need a studio monitor more...
I'm thinking MacRumours might be right on this one. Why drop the price of professional software by 80% when you're releasing a version for new hardware? The only thing I can think of is pushing sales of said new hardware, but without Intel towers this is a limited market. Shake could sell some MacBooks, particularly 17" ones.
Even that's a bit weird. I've been running Shake 4 on my 17" MacBook, and Shake's three mouse button interface is difficult to emulate when you're sitting in a Starbucks. It's really a desktop application.
I'm all for new, improved software, though. And better Final Cut integration would be good. You have to do some slightly unintuitive things when sending a video to Shake.

It should be noted that "it really flies on Intel Macs" when compared to the PowerBook G4. Here's what Apple says about it:
----------------------------
Performance tests on a MacBook Pro have shown that common tasks such as color correction, warping and the application of filters are processed up to 3.5 times faster on a MacBook Pro than on a PowerBook G4.
----------------------------
This shouldn't be at all surprising. The real comparison should be against the PowerMac G5s.

You think existing users might be a little pissed?
A friend bought Shake 5 days ago at the full UK price. He contacted Apple and they basically said tough shit!
He is also one of Apple's much vaunted switchers. That switch can go both both ways.

When they cut the price of Aperture (when it went Universal) they offered a rebate. Of course that was only $200, so it wasn't such a big deal for Apple's bottom line, but then again, it was only $200, so it wasn't such a big deal to users as this is..!

There are a lot of visual effects houses that use Shake with Linux (Weta for example), so this may be an attempt to turn these companies towards the Mac again.

Here's the funniest part of this article: Existing Shake customers can get the upgrade for $49.
So you paid $3K for the previous version, the price dropped to $499, and you STILL have to pay another 49 bucks to get the upgrade?
