Skype w/video leaked, will destroy your Mac
According to a Skype developer, an old and unstable version of Skype for Mac has been leaked onto file sharing networks across the globe. If you spot this file, do not download it! "It is an internal unstable development version, and thus it is extremely buggy" and "it will destroy your contacts and other data". We wouldn't want that now would we?Since the Windows version of Skype gained video conferencing support in March, many Mac user have felt left behind and stuck with the non-video capable version of Skype. Fortunately, this warning also comes with some good news; Skype version 2.0 for the Mac is nearly ready for primetime. The screenshot of a video capable of Skype on the left of this post is the tantalizing proof.
So, try and resist the temptation to go searching for a pre-release version that could potentially destroy your Mac, and wait a little longer for the official version. Remember what happened the last time someone bit the Apple?

I have lost my SkypeOut contacts. Before I downloaded it, I put my old version of Skype in my documents folder, so this type of thing would not happen. I then founf out how buggy, and trashed. Then I opened my Old version to find my SkypeOut contacts gone!
Can someone help me, trace the contacts, so I can turn the world the right side up. Cheers in advance!

If you want to try it out... just make a backup of your ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/ folder and your ~/Library/Preferences/com.skype.skype.plist file
Try it out and if it doesn't work, trash that directory and the plist file and restore the backups. Simple enough.
I'm actually using it right now on 10.3.9 and i haven't seen any major problems so far. i don't know what everyone is complaining about (but then again, i'm kindof behund the times without Tiger... stupid work laptop!).
just remember: if you're going to use beta software... BACK UP YOUR PREFERENCES!!!

I installed it and it works just fine, no problems whatsoever, here's a picture of how exactly it looks on file transfers, text chat, and video conferencing.

If you are really worried about it destroying your data, why not just run it from a disk image?

Yeah right, they are just pissed that it leaked early. Do a backup, install it and see how it runs just fine.

If you want to try the unstable version of Skype, do it at your own risk.

...or you could just use Sightspeed instead for Mac to PC videoconferencing.

Duplicating the old application or running it from a disk image will do no good, because it will access your preferences in your user folder regardless. Either backup your prefs there or don't use it at all.
