After months of work, the excellent multiple network instant messenging program, Adium, has reached version 1.0b1, and this release is a great one. It sports major improvements to interactions with AIM, ICQ, and .Mac IM networks, iTunes integration, the default look and feel and privacy options. It now requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 and is a universal binary. Please note that this is still in beta, though I was using it last night without any significant problems presenting themselves.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Adium 1.0 would support video...I was excited to see this being released but I'm a bit disappointed since there is not mention of video support - I will just have to wait a bit longer! Still a big fan of Adium tho!

I don't like this new version. When I had it installed it showed ALL of my buddies, including the ones that were not online. Is there an option to disable this "feature" or is it just part of the package? I ended up removing it from my computer and using the previous version.

Still no video support. But what do you expect... it's built on Gaim.
At least Yahoo have released a unibin version of msgr, which includes many of the windows-yahoo features, and yes, webcam. And according to the yahoo page, it will include MSN connection very soon :)
Yahoo for personal, MSN for work. Thats all I need :)

For those of you who were expecting voice and video, check out this post on the Adium Blog...

Nice to see Adium still progressing, I got a bit worried when it seemed to be stuck at 0.89.1 for over a month!

Great IM client. Now if only they'd get rid of that ridiculous duck. It makes my eyes bleed, which is a terrible thing.
Surely I'm not the only one who detest it? I think only Fire has a worse icon/logo.

YES!! YES!! YES!!
This is favorite mac app!
On my winblows PC at work I use Trillian Pro... but Adium has just a much cleaner interface.
... and yea, i'm still very anxious about video support, but eh... when i need to use video I just switch over to iChat, YahooMessenger, or aMSN...
It *still* would be cooler if everything was in one nice, neatly packaged program. Hopefully with the IM networks starting to open and share source code and APIs... this might happen one day.
the only other thing I would add is IM support for MySpace... not that i'm one of those myspace whores... but uh... doah. (EVIL MYSPACE)

The duck is what makes Adium. Look through the Xtras, and you'll find that most of the mods are offshoots of the duck. Long live Adiumy!

i think the best thing about adium is it's incredibly customizable. it seems most people don't realize it, but aside from downloading extras you can actually rearrange the format of your buddy list, along with colors, iconsets, among other things.
if you dont like the default duck (which i dont blame you for), i recommend vectory duck:

they're beautiful

I use the 12" PowerBook weilding duck myself:

But alas, this new version although much better in many ways doens't work with my old MSN account. My Windows luser friends will be silenced until this is fixed!
I hear the issue only affects some MSN accounts not all of them:

(Someone else's bug report, exactly the same as I see.)

if you don't like the duck there are a ton of dock and menu bar variations. my dock icon is an ichat-esque speech bubble which changes colors with status. it's pretty cool actually.
looks like a ton of cool fixes on the full list. i shall download now!

Trashing the preferences fixed my MSN problem...
Then I simply copied my logs back into place and 1.0b2 is better than the old version in every way.

on second thought, i can't even stay connected to AIM with this! i got to look around the preferences and menus and it looked great but if it's not functional i have no idea what to do. it logs in and out until i get locked out for too many attempts. i submitted a ticket, hopefully the issue will be resolved soon. until then, i've reverted back to .89

"The current release is Adium 0.89.1.
Do not post this beta to version tracking sites like MacUpdate or VersionTracker."
On the page you have linked to, therefore 1.0b2 (now on that same page) isn't released, it's just available. This is also why Adium's check for updates feature is not claiming an update is available.
