Call Recorder plugin for Skype
Call Recorder from Ecamm Network is a Skype plugin that allows you to record your calls (interviews, podcasts, etc.) as two-track AAC files for that perfect 'edited for your blackmailing pleasure' effect (calls can also be converted to MP3 for the AAC-haters in the audience). A recent version update also brings the ability to save voicemails as quicktime movies.Call Recorder is a Universal Binary and requires Mac OS X 10.3.9, as well as Skype for Mac v1.4 or higher. A demo is available, while a license costs $14.95. As of this writing, Ecamm Network is offering a sale price of $12.95.

This is a nice plugin, but I think it's priced too high. Hopefully someone will make a free plugin soon or Skype will actually include it in future versions of Skype.

I'm not sure why you can just record it with one of the free audio recorders. Does Skype also have a record button? I have used Skype but I'm too lazy to launch it now to look? While I don't know the laws everywhere - keep in mind it's illegal in many states to record a phone conversation without getting consent of the other party.

Priced to high or not, it still is a very good product. My podcast is recorded exclusively using it!

I was wondering about the legality of this. It seems likely that a Skype-POTS call would be illegal to record, but what about a Skype-to-Skype call? Anyone have an answer?

Most jurisdictions allow phone calls to be recorded as long as one of the parties involved knows of the recordings. Other jusrisdictions require both parties to know they are being recorded. Regarldess of the law the technology is legal.

The Wireless Phone Recording Controller ($26 at RadioShack) is so much simpler. It plugs into your Mac and your cell phone and records directly into whatever recording software you choose (I use Audio Hijack Pro). Skype is great, but I make 99% of my calls on my cell.

The law on this is divided into one party vs. two party states. As the name implies, one party states require that only one of the people on the phone call being recorded is aware it is being recorded; while two party states require both participants of the phone call are cognizant the call is being recorded. The vast majority of states are one party. There are lists of which states are one or two party states. An older list can be found at: http://www.acksent.com/legal_recording.htm (note: this list is a couple of year old, so check with your state's approprate agency for verification).
