Use the Nike + iPod Sport Kit on any shoe with help from a Nike accessory

Now don't think we're just trying to pimp Nike's stuff here because we're getting hookups or something (we have to run out and buy our own kits like anyone else), but TUAW reader Mr. Gaskell recommended a tip that could allow you to use the new iPod Sport Kit with any shoes, without the need for awkward lace tying or unsightly duct tape: Nike makes a small wallet accessory (pictured) called 'Nike Run Shoe Wallet S05' for $10 that attaches to the top of any shoe. It's designed to hold small personal items for a run, such as change, but (as I remember) it's too small even for something like a driver's license, but it should be a perfect fit for the shoe sensor. I'd link to it, but I can't find it anywhere at the Niketown site; I've only seen it in a brick and mortar Niketown store. I'm sure they're also available elsewhere on the web, such as eBay or in similar forms from competitors.

I have no idea if the kit is still accurate when attaching it with an accessory like this, but we're receiving reports that people are having success with jury-rigging the sensor to their shoes with the aforementioned unique lace tying and duct taping techniques; using something like this wallet doesn't sound like your results should be any different. Any readers out there try this yet?

Shoewallets from http://www.shoewallet.com works great (they have a customer review here, http://www.shoewallet.com/ipodsporttest). Unlike the Nike shoewallet, the Shoewallet.com wallet carries Credit Cards too which is a huge advantage. Apparently they are going to be launching an Ipod Sport Kit Giveaway soon for the holiday season. I can't find anything on it on their site but I saw it on a runners world forum. Anyone seen?

We've had a rush of orders on our shoewallets since the launch of the Nike+Ipod Sport. On our main page we have a link to a review of the Shoewallet vs. Nike Air Zoom+ done by a non-compensated customer. Her take was that the data provided was a mirror image of each other whether the sensor was in the shoe or the shoewallet. Benefit our shoewallet has over the Nike shoewallet is that ours does hold credit cards/hotel keys, etc. With our goal of getting people to always carry ID when on a walk or jog (ID card included with each unit), we love the exposure this great new product is bringing to us. To keep up the momentum use coupon code ipodsport for a 20% discount thru September.

If anyone has the new Nike Airmax 360's and wants to add a nike+ipod transmitter, all I did is put the nike+ipod transmitter in the left side of the shoe, up by the ankle area. There is a small pocket perfect for the transmitter.

I really didn't want to go stripping layers from my sole. So, I bought a Nike wrist band. They have some that are very thin in the main band but that have an oval-shaped part with a Nike sign on it. Remove a bit of the stitching, stick the sensor in the oval, sew it back up, and it fits perfectly.

I took it out on a hilly 1 mile course without calibrating it and it read 1.04 miles. Good stuff :)

Guys, cmon. This unfortunately isn't a forum for fighting about who exploits children and which shoe companies are along for the ride. Let's keep the comments on topic please.

"Most of these factories make shoes for the rest of them - Nike, New Balance, Reebok, Adidas, Asics all rolling off the same assembly lines. So, no matter which you buy, you are supporting these conditions.....
Read up on the subject before spouting this drivel."

Isn't funny how people who tell you to "read up" are the most ignorant about a subject? Just because 90% of shoe makers are immoral doesn't make them right. And a quick check on Google wil get you pointed to some fair labor shoes.

But I'm not saying that you can't buy anything made in China, it's just that Phil Knight's ethics are so egregious. Why don't you read up on how he selects areas for his factories? He also admitted to knoowing that 14 year old girls were working for almost nothing making Nikes and had no problem with it. Read up on that.

For anyone this might help: I just used a good ol' fashioned plastic bag and wrapped up the sensor in it. Then I slid the sensor in under my shoe laces and wrapped the bag around a couple of other laces, just to make sure it didn't go anywhere. This was cheaper than even a $10 running wallet (which I still plan to buy), and it kept the sensor dry, as a storm rolled through town in the middle of my run.
