Move your Boot Camp install of Windows to Parallels

Boot Camp and Parallels: two very different ways to run Windows on your Mac and never the twain shall meet, right? Not so fast, there is a way to migrate your Windows install from a Boot Camp install (or for that matter ANY Windows install whether it be on a Mac or a PC) to Parallels. It isn't exactly easy, and it does require lots of disk space and some third party apps, but if you really want to go virtual follow these instructions.

Dan,
No, the installs are saved independently, though Parallels states that they would like to have a way to pull the virtual OS from the Windows installed on the partition created by BootCamp. I wouldn't hold your breath.

DVDdesign,
You can legally install Win on Bootcamp and Parallels and get all the updates for each. Just call up MS support and tell them the situation. They'll make the updates work ---and therefore legal--- for both installs on the Mac.

No. Boot Camp and Parallels use different installations. And legally, they require a different license to install each.

And as compelling and useful as this application set is, MS will never get another dime of my money. They stole money from my bank account and kept it. Now it'll either go to Apple or to Linux.
No more windows for me!

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere else, but it it possible to use *the same install* of windows? So that changes made inside of Paralles would show up when using BootCamp (and vice versa)?

I am using both Bootcamp and Parallels. It would be cool to combine them, but not sure it is worth the hassle for us mere mortals. I have these solutions running Win XP Pro on an Intel Imac. I was confident enough in both to give away a PC I kept around for work items that required windows.

After using this solution for a few weeks now, I can't imagine how Dell or HP could ever sell another PC again. It is that outstanding of a solution. I also see that one of the direct mac catalogs will custom install windows as a configuration option. so even for those who do not want the hassle of installing windows and/or do not have a copy of windows laying around can take advantage of this. good times ahead for mac users....

So should I assume that Parallels can see a Virtual PC install on a PowerPC Mac? If so, that would be cool, but I rarely use Windows for personal stuff anymore (normally a Palm install that's Windows only, Visio, older Outlook data), so it's not that big of a deal for me, but still, it would be a cool option to have that as a migration path.

Or use the migration programme that comes with Windows XP and dump your documents and settings to your ipod then load them onto Windows XP inside Parallels?
