On improving the iPod's aging UI and experience
The iPod is the 800-pound gorilla of the DAP industry - there's no doubt about it (well, almost). In its 4+ years of existence, the player has quickly won owner's hearts because of its ease of use and seamless iTunes management experience, amongst other reasons. I personally have owned one of every generation of iPod since the original 5 GB model with the *gasp* mechanical scroll wheel, before all this fancy touch wheel stuff you young whipper-snappers are spoiled with today.In all this time, however, the iPod's famously simple UI has more or less remained that way - staggeringly basic. While I personally am no fan of devices that add features and options simply for the sake of claiming 'it has more', I'm starting to think that there are a few areas that the iPod's UI and experience are in serious need of an update. Music (and video) collections are getting larger, people are interacting with their devices and the libraries on their computers through increasingly new (and truly useful) ways, and I think the iPod needs to catch up with the times.
Take Sony Ericsson's 4 GB flash memory music phone, the W950. While I by no means am about to toss my iPod for this expensive gadget (though, I think it is worth noting that Sony Ericsson's music phones, as well as the latest version of Windows Mobile 5, both support AAC files now), I do think the iPod could benefit from incorporating this 'browse albums by album art' feature - especially in an age of gorgeous color screens and 'make everything pretty' design techniques. Sure, this option's success and usefulness would hinge on how many songs and albums actually have art embedded in them, but maybe Apple could finally add a tool or plugin to iTunes that goes out and gets the art automatically. Countless little utilities and addons already do it, and heck, even the commercially successful Delicious Library does it - why can't iTunes?
Speaking of color, why not let users add a splash of usefulness to the (decidedly still black and white) iPod's UI by allowing them to specify a set of colors to artists, albums and/or songs that have ratings assigned to them. Red for five stars, orange for four, green for three - you get the idea. The human eye can pick out one of these colors in a list of 500+ artists a lot easier than the basic, Atari-esque menu color scheme we've had since day one.Last but not least is Apple's beloved 'shuffle' feature, after which they went so far as to name an entire iPod line after the concept. Front Row - which offers an iPod-on-your-Mac experience for your media - has even received a 'shuffle songs' option at the top of playlists and artist song listings - why not the iPod? It's a pain-in-the-thumb to keep having to click back out to the top-level Settings area on the iPod to adjust the shuffle setting between, for example, playing playlists or an entire album from start to finish.
These are the major areas where I believe the iPod's experience could use a serious update, but I'm sure they aren't the only ones. What say you, TUAW readers - does the iPod feel lacking? Sound off, if only for the empty hope that Apple's engineers might actually be reading TUAW - and listening.

I think the linear nature of the iPod UI is ready for the chop. Call me controversial, but Apple should replace the wheel with a trackpad, and replace the list-based UI with a more intuitive graphical UI like some I've seen appearing on online academic databases, using circles instead of lists. This would speed up all the processes previous commenters have mentioned, would allow for more levels - and would look great.

I personally disagree with the idea of color-for-rating.I would also like to see screensaver and wallpaper support with the pictures in your photo library and theme support also.
The shuffle idea is great (would save me so much time shifting in and out of the Settings menu).
The only other UI nag that I have is something that my first gen Creative Jukebox did (size of a CD player, but 6GB, woohoo). When you scroll to the top of a list, it should jump to the bottom and vice versa. Would instantly cut any list scrolling in half.
Problem: When listening to a song, it is MUCH to hard to get to other songs from that album/artist (unless you browsed to that specific album/artist, then you just press Menu). I listen to more than 90% of my music through large random playlists, and if I hear a song from an album that I want to hear more music from, it takes a bunch of Menu clicks to get up to Artists, then a bunch of scrolling to get down to the Artist, then more scrolling and clicking to get to the album. If doing this in a car, someone would have blind-sided me by now.
SOLUTION: Whenever you are listening to ANY song, HOLD down the center-circle button for 2 seconds, and you are brought to the menu of that song in its album. Now you are already browsing the album (inside the artist) that you want to access. Press Menu once, and you can change albums, etc, etc...
This is SUCH a simple solution that doesn't even require any new buttons, just added functionality!
I'm going to hang onto my B/W 4th Gen 40Gig iPod until the UI is improved in this way. But once it's improved, Apple can say hello to 400 more dollars from me.
personally I don't see how browsing by album art would be worthwhile whatsoever - the screen is simply not large enough to display anything but maybe 8 images recognizable as the album's art. add that to the fact that i tons of artists... this just seems like an even worse version of the current browsing situation.
i very much like #3's idea of scrolling by beginning letter first, and then hitting the select button and then scrolling normally. this would solve a lot of the "oh damnit why do i want to listen to xela, they are at the bottom of the list."
for instance, when you enter the selection menu, initially you are scrolling only by first letter, so there would be 26 choices, a b c - z. after you select what letter your band falls under (i think it would be best if the look of the current menu stayed the same, only the scrolling functionality would be different), then it goes to the current mode of artist by artist.
the best way to upgrade the iPod UI while maintaining a successful and accepted look, is to have a Front Row interface built in. The graphics capability is there, the battery consumption is not really affected, and the powerful ARM processor is there to handle it all. Why not? I would be one really happy person if Steve announced a new iPod with a Front Row interface this August.

Basically I agree with you. The iPod has built it's success on being elegant and simple, and it's probably a good idea to continue on that path as that's where the mass-market is.
However, I do feel it would be a pity if Apple didn't give us powerusers something new every now and then. By turning this functionality off by default the casual user wouldn't have to see them but we who live by our iPods would get a better experience.
I think there is a lot that could be done that both we and the casual user would like:
* Adding more metatags to the music. How sad is it that it's impossible to get "Michael & Janet Jackson - Scream" sorted both under Michael Jackson and under Janet as opposed to a third artist named Michel & Janet?
* Adding a "shuffle"-option at the top of each artist-/album-/playlist-songlist
* Adding a "Best Of"-option below the shuffle option
* Gapless playback, of course.
* Album art-browsing
* Automatic downloading of album art
* Automatic downloading of lyrics
* Automatic metatagging
...and then without "disturbing" the casual user I think features like these could be implemented:
* A Keyword-tag that's selected kind of like you assign stars to a song. Songs would then be browsable under keywords like: Live, Instrumental, Party, Romantic etc..
* An indication as to wether an album is complete or not.
* Possibility to make smart playlists just a little bit more advanced. For instance, I'd like to be able to make a playlist with R'n'B or hip-hop-songs that's got 5 stars.
I agree that it could use a few updates. Thing I have always wanted is a quick switch between playlists. Kind of like a jump on a tv remote. I'm listen to an audiobook right now, but would like to listen to some tunes for a while. I'd like to go play some music and hit some to flip me back to the last thing I was playing...My audio book. This could very easily be done by pressing and holding the center button.
Also, having the folder support in playlist would be really nice. I have a folder in iTunes that says Audiobooks. But when I look on my iPod, there's no Audiobooks folder, just the playlists names. I end up creating playlists that start with an A- so I can easily find my audiobooks.
I'd like to be able to define a set of keywords in iTunes, so that on the iPod I could assign the keywords to songs as I hear them. That way it won't be necessary to use 1 star as partytune. Apple could provide some basic keywords to start with: Party, Romantic, Faulty, Intrumental, Live... etc.
I'd also like the shuffle option available in every playlist/album/artist songlist. I'd also like to add another option next to it called "Best of" or something like that. It should play the best rated and most often played songs from an album/artist/playlist.
I have the first gen 20gb iPod. It still works great and I see no reason to replace it until it's dead. Maybe just for more music as it is full and I have about 30gb on my TiPwrBk. I would like to see the ability on iTunes software to view and scroll through album (CD) cover art. When I think of an album/CD, the art is what I see in my head. I wish it worked similar to iPhoto so that I could view many or a few depending upon how I set up the window.
