Apple slashes Cinema display prices, too

A number of observant TUAW readers have also noticed that Apple has (quietly) slashes Cinema display prices with the introduction of the Mac Pro. There were rumors of Cinema updates before WWDC, but it seems that Apple simply wanted to give our pocketbooks a break with the $500 increase in the Mac Pro's price. Cinema display prices now look a little something like this:
  • 20-inch: $699
  • 23-inch: $999
  • 30-inch: $1999 (what a drop!)
Unfortunately, I can't even get into the EDU store so I'm not sure how much better prices are for students yet. Ultimately, these prices should look a bit more appealing amidst criticism of what some say are slightly overpriced LCDs.

Still over priced, sorry to say, but true, Samsung 20 inch at least 400 dollars less.

The Dell's may be a little less expensive overall, but at least now the price difference for a monitor that actually looks decent is a little easier to swallow.

Still, I was hoping Apple would release a monitor for graphics pros with higher end colour calibration. Looks like I'll be waiting for Eizo to match LaCie's 12 bit.

#6: If I recall correctly, Apple has a (quiet) policy of matching their own prices within a 14 day period. Here's hoping that guy finds out about it somehow.

I just got the dell last week for a bit less than $2200 after tax. Shipping was free and took all of 39 hours. It may not match my MBP, and perhaps I would have gone with the Apple just because of price (looking young and keeping your college ID are good things)...but I'll have to say that Apple needs to improve their display. It's a breeze to rotate the dell in every direction and raise it up and down, and the memory card reader is the fastest I've ever used. I'm actually using 3/4 of the USB ports, whereas I'd never use the firewire on the apple. The maneuverability is the key point, though...being able to see the screen perfectly whether I'm on the floor or in a chair or lying in bed is fantastic. The last thing is the warranty - comes with 3 years, expandable to 5 for $79, and dell overnights you a new monitor and lets you ship your broken one back upon receipt.

Except for the 30 incher, it's still cheaper to get the exact same display from Dell:

$459, $747, $2199

Dell's 30" is $2199. Apple has a lower price than Dell on basically the same thing? What's next? Snow in Mexico?
