All the little things: WWDC 2006 roundup part 2

It's a sequel! That's right boys and girls: in our never-ending quest to dig up every detail we can on the recent events surrounding WWDC, Leopard and other random tidbits, we've gathered a few more juicy items for your digestion.
  • Apple 'Teams?' Readers sent in various tips, and even The Gruber™ linked it. So it must be real. But what is it? [UPDATE: Looks like Teams is an advertised wiki feature of Leopard Server.]
  • Readers are noting that, in the keynote, Bertrand Serlet says "With Spotlight, finally, it's easy to find information on your local disks and information on the web." Could this be a prelude to an even farther-reaching (and slower) Spotlight in Leopard?
  • MacFixIt has a nice roundup of actual application versions included in Leopard. Of specific interest, they note that Exposé is listed as a 1.0 app, which might also mean that this icon in the dock heralds Spotlight as a full-blown app as well.
  • Happy Finder, Sad Finder - neurotic Finder? Sorry for the crummy screenshots, but these were both taken from different times of the keynote (36:28 and 1:01:25, to be exact. Thanks David B.!). Could they have been from different Macs? If so, why the curious change in such a fundamental icon?
  • This is on iChat's preview page, but it's still worth mentioning in part because no one did on stage: along with the new video and slideshow features, it also has screen sharing so users can get truly collaborative over a chat.
  • This might be a new type of file preview ability in the Finder, or it could just be an extra feature in Time Machine. Either way, it looks handy. It also seems to be an indication that Apple is moving towards a broader use of palettes like those in iWork and iWeb, including the transparent style found in iPhoto '06.
  • Some readers are reporting a new icon in Safari's toolbar (which can be seen on the Dashboard preview page), but that's just the Dash Clippings widget tool.
That's it for another round of WWDC and Leopard tidbits, and thanks to the many who sent these in; you readers have some good eyes. Keep those tips rolling in, and we'll keep rounding them up.

IN THE KEYNOTE Bertrand Serlet says "With Spotlight, finally, it's easy to find information on your local disks !! THAN !! information on the web." It is because of his french accent, he says zen, instead of then.

Maybe the sad finder indicated that the finder should not be launched on this machine as it has been updated - seems a little silly for that to be the case though!

What's the time code for the lack of black triangle on iCal.

What i'ma thinking is that the finder goes all sad when an app freezes. And when the finder freezes...?

Hope that's a feature.

"Oh, my Mac isn't that happy today. Sorry!"

Oooh, Sad Finder, I'll go check it out…

The idea of it being a differentiator between the two systems sounds quite logic to me, but I still firmly believe that there will be a major Finder revamp. I want to believe.

I've searched High and low for it and can't find it but there was a leopard screenshot some time ago that had the Dash Clipings icon in Safari! At least I think so as I remember there being a random black icon in the picture and it was given no description. I believe the link to it was in the comments of a tuaw post about a fake screenshot and I even remember someone making a strange comment about the icon which in retrospect suggest they knew it was real. I think we may of had a real leek after all...

He says, "Finally, it's easier to find information on your local disks than information on the web."

Also, guys, don't think so much into the sad Finder icon. I think this is simply so Steve and the rest of the presenters and technicians don't forget that they're on the backup system. When they do the screen mirrors, they need to make sure it's the right one.

Mike =)

Hiram, I think you are grasping at straws a little. There will still be a Finder, as it's still needed, but it'll be better. Spotlight will be a search and display tool. We still need ways to organize our files at times. They might change the name of the Finder because finding things is what Spotlight is for.

I'm getting more and more convinced that the Finder will go. In the Time Machine demo, the guy says: "So this is the standard Finder." That seems to imply there's an alternative. The sad Finder icon is a strong hint, because would the Finder be sad if it was about to be improved? No, it's sad because it's going out. And like I pointed out before, Jobs names an unspecified "better and faster way to navigate the whole system" as one of the improvements in the Universal Access part of the keynote. Also, the Spotlight icon in the Dock, seen in the demo, seems a clear sign that the Finder will be replaced by Spotlight 2.0.

Teams isn't just the wiki - check out the post from Apple's Eric Zelenka on the new Mac OS Forge site reported by Mac Rumors (and others) - It allows a lot of other things such as contact sharing (hurrah! - we really need this in my studio)

Vemon: I actually heard:
"With Spotlight, finally, it's easy to find information on your local disks THAN information on the web." I think he was talking about how, with Google, you used to be able to find things on the web easily, but the Finder's search was bad. Now, he's saying, Spotlight is so good that it's actually easier to find things on your computer.
