Hey Folders! is a handy utility from the maker of Mail.Appetizer that extends the Finder's colored label feature to labeled folders themselves. As you can see, the entire folder icon takes on the color of the label, though files (fortunately) do not receive the colored overlay treatment (I wager that would result in some really funky looking icons). Hey Folders! requires a small amount of manual work to get it to start with each login, however, as you simply need to add it to your startup items if you want it to augment your finder 24/7 (it's a background process known as a daemon; it won't appear in the dock or menubar - only in a process list like Activity Monitor). Full instructions are listed at the Hey Folders! site. Note: at the moment, Hey Folders! is PPC only, but the developer told me a Universal Binary version is 'coming soon.'
Hey Folders! is offered as freeware from Bronson Beta.

Doesn't work under Mac OS X 10.4.7 (MacBook Pro), tried to get it started several times. Maybe because it's PPC? Any Hints welcome...

I don't think that Rosetta will run daemons if they are PPC only.

I wager that you'd be wagering correctly.

Labels are a throwback to the days before custom icons, to the days of System 6. They aren't as useful as they used to be. In the old days you just had black and white icons, and coloured labels made things easier to spot. Then System 7 came along with coloured icons and the ability to apply custom icons followed pretty quickly, making colour labels moot.
I actually prefer the way MacOS X's labels work, since I usually view folders in list view. Those coloured names really pop out at you.

Works fine on a Powerbook with 10.4.7.
I use the colour labels a lot to prioritize and organize presentations, and items I'm working on (draft, review, rewrite, proofed and ready).
I like the coloured folders in the little scroll window when you open the finder too, great for us visual people.
I recall once chaperoning a bunch of Aussies, who absoulely loved our coloured money, they just colour coded each bill to quantity of beer — blue for pint, purple for a pitcher...red for keep them coming...

If you want, you can easily change the folder icon to any color you like, good if you want to theme your Mac.
