Universal Binary of Flash Player 9 released
Adobe has cranked out a Universal Binary of Flash Player 9 for Intel Mac consumption. Strangely, a PowerPC-only build is still available on the download page, though Insanely Mac is reporting that it's an earlier build. If you're interested in what's actually new in this latest version, check out Adobe's page with the full details.

The reason there is a PPC-only build that is an earlier build is because the latest version announced is for Intel Macs only. Nothing else has changed about the Flash reading code itself. So for the millions of Mac users who aren't using an Intel Mac, there's no reason or need to have bloated Universal versions of plugins installed.

Flash player isn't universal, they just have an intel version and a ppc version.

Anyone care to comment on whether Flash Player 9 is stable enough yet? That is, I have version 8.0r24 installed now -- will I regret installing this?

I have a few problems with Flash Player 9. More with the Stand Alone Flash Player 9 but it may just be user error. I have Flash 8 Pro and I don’t understand why I can’t export the Flash file into a .swf file that can be played with Flash Player 9. The highest i can go is Flash Player 8. I have tried to update my Flash 8 Pro but it does not seem like there is an update for it. Technically your not suppose to export stuff to the newest version of Flash Player because you should go a few versions down just so its more compatible with older Flash Players.
A few websites have given me weird stuff saying I need to install Flash to surf the webpage when I have had Flash Player 9. I would also like to point out that while I have been working on my work computer, that only has Flash Player 8 on it, some sites with direct me to download Flash Player 9 to view it properly.
In conclusion, I have confused myself and most likely any one that reads this. Thank you.

I've been using the version 9,0,18,0 on my Intel iMac for weeks now with no issues. I thought that was the first universal one.

I installed the UB(?!) version on my iBook this afternoon. No problems at all with 9,0,20,0 on PPC :)

I've been wanting to update to the latest version, but all Flash content breaks with this update. At first, it was having both Flash and Flip4Mac WMV at once that broke all Flash files, but now it breaks consistently regardless of whether Flip4Mac is present or not.
Reported this to Adobe back in an earlier round of beta testing, but nothing came of it, I see. I haven't even seen others mention the issue. I'm apparently unique!
And don't get me wrong, but I'm fairly certain that this Universal Binary "Intel-based Macs" thing is simply a misunderstanding of what UB software does. I've heard plenty of people say that it works on PPC-based hardware without a flaw.

the big question is - does it make flash quicker?
i absolutely hate how slow flash is on a mac compared to a pc...

** Flash player isn't universal, they just have an intel version and a ppc version. **
Wrong!
Flash player 9.0 r20 is Universal binary. It is running it on my PowerBook G4 just fine.
So I don't understand why they still have the 9.0 r16 PowerPC only version up for download.

I reckon the PPC-only download is for legacy (pre-Tiger) systems that don't understand Universal Binaries.

Every since I installed the new Flash 9 for intel, I have been having my Mac hang. I know how to keep my mac maintained with the correct maintenance, so I know thats not likely issue...and this is the only thing I can trace it back to.
Some of the problems are apps just bouncing, Flash 9 Permissions keep getting corrupted up, and need repaired, Mac hangs on shutdown...etc.
I wonder if this is an anomaly.. but I hope not.
