TextExpander 1.4 released

SmileOnMyMac has released TextExpander 1.4, an update to their customizable typing utility that allows users to assign keywords to snippets of text, ultimately saving gobs of time in re-typing things like phrases, websites, signatures and more. New features in this indispensable tool include:
  • User-specified delimiters ("Set Delimiters..." button in Preferences tab)
  • Import comma and tab-delimited text, RTF, and RTFD files
  • Choose TextExpander or Textpander style menu bar icon in Preferences
  • Sort snippets by date created (helps when locating import groups)
  • Sort snippets by date modified (helps when tracking recent changes)
Also of note on TextExpander's new features list at VersionTracker is 'Mac OS X 10.4 required,' but I don't know if that's a new feature in this particular version or of the actual product switchover from the old Textpander.

Either way, this is a free upgrade and is available from SmileOnMyMac, as is a fully functional 30-day demo.

[UPDATE: Jean from SmileOnMyMac let us know in the comments that this new 1.4 version is, in fact, Tiger-only. The 1.3.1 version which still works on Panther (10.3.9) is still available from their site. Thanks Jean!]

It's absolutely stark raving insane and simply Halliburton-level greedy for SmileOnMyMac to take a formerly donationware product and decide to start charging users $30 for it. I'm thinking that the first word of the company's name -- SmileOnMyMac -- should instead be renamed for another bodily process that even begins with the same first letter. It'd be a more apt description of their pricing strategy and the disrespect it shows to the Mac community.

from the website: "Users who have donated for the original Textpander on or before May 23, 2006 are eligible for a free TextExpander license." thats nice at least. I wonder what the legality issues are in still using textpander now that its been sold and rebranded as TextExpander. If it wasn't open source is it still legal for all the places still mirroring it to continue offering it?

David, my grumble was aimed squarely at the new owners. Good luck to the original developer if he can sell a product on and at least gain some reward for his work. A $30 tag seems, to me, excessive for simple software, particularly when something like TypeIt4Me is available as shareware or, better still, the original Textpander which is still around.

The Mac OS X 10.4 and later requirement is new for TextExpander 1.4. The previous version, 1.3, which required 10.3.9, is still available to download from our site.

Well, there is something to be said for a developer trying to make a living off of his work. The original dev wasn't earning anything for his hard work while trying to offer an open-ended compensation system to users. He's within every right to try and receive his deserved compensation for all his hard work by selling the product to SmileOnMyMac.

What a difference an 'e' makes; the original textpander (no e) was free (or donationware) until it was bought by SmileOnMyMac who promptly slapped a $30 tag on it.
