Ambrosia Software has released Snapz Pro X 2.0.3, an Intel Mac-compatible upgrade to its top-notch screen recording app. Other improvements include a tune-up to make Snapz Pro run smoothly on single processor machines, and a fix to ensure control over whether the cursor appears in your recording. I use Snapz Pro almost every day to make static screenshots for TUAW and for print publications, and to make movies of my screen for video podcasts. I love, love, love this program. Sure you can use the built-in screenshot capability in OS X, but Snapz Pro offers much more control over static screenshots and the added bonus of recording movement on your screen. Snapz Pro X 2.0.3 is a free upgrade for registered users of Snapz Pro X 2.0.x. New users pay $29 for the static version and $69 for the movie version.

Why does "Get Info" show that it's still a PPC-only application?

$69? You are having a laugh, right? If I learn Coccoa programming, I'm going to have a stab at making a freeware screen recording app and kill their business. $69 is obscene

their is an intel compatible screen capturing software, I cant remeber the link but i used it to capture a video a while back, it was kinda buggy and crashed if you moused over it some way. I played with snapz on my g5 (demo) and it was much more user friendly. maybe macZot can have a sell for this.

Why do you recommend this utility over the built in Image Capture utility - Grab??
The built in tool is free, comes preinstalled on all OS X 10.4.x systems (PPC and Intel) and works really well.

For a useful screen recorder, check out http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf/ I've used it on a PC fine and it seems to work on the Mac as well.

Because it is. This is just a Rosetta compatible interrim release.

If you've ever used SnapzPro X, you'd understand why. Grab is convinient, but in now way can it hold a candle to the performance of SnapzPro X. I used to use it a few years ago for making CBT videos, and it enabled me to make fullscreen screencaptures of my desktop at full 30fps, WITH audio. There is simply nothing on the Mac that can do screencaps as well as SnapzPro X

30fps... so this is a video capture tool. hmmm... guess I understand how this differs from Grab now. Grab can only capture still shots, not make short video's (at least not easily).
Will give it a spin. Thanks.

to list more of Snapz strongpoints:
effects to the screenshot (borders, scaling, drop shadows, etc)
choice of formats for saving
naming on saving
previewing before capturing
mouse visible (or not)
I could go on. I think that it is a LOT better than grab. I have been using it for years, as well. However, I DO think that the price is a wee bit high (even though the video capture is much improved over the years) and I was "suckered" into thinking it was a UB, rather than just Rosetta compatible. Not much difference to me - 2.0.3 worked, but clinky already on my MBP. Hmmm, back to using Grab in the meantime, I guess. The performance is is still a drag as a PPC app.

I recently started doing screencasts so I had to go look for a good recorder program. Here are a review of the ones I found.

This not a universal binary, but in the release notes for this version, Ambrosia said that there is no noticeable performance hit from it being a PPC build. That, and it works: the version before this would crash when keystroking to bring up the app, so this is fine by me.
One of the BIG uses for me is taking measurements of the screen using the selection tool. It's very help for designing sites. Grab ain't got nothin on that!!

Sweeeet! I've been waiting for this to be converted. I just hope my license will transfer over (free upgrade) or at least offer a cheap upgrade. I really miss this app! (I make training documentation at work, and this is MUCH better than the built-in Grab.)
At least now I know they're making progress. I'll wait for a universal binary, though.

On this week's iLifeZone, Jan mentioned using this product to capture video then editing using iMovie. Every time I try this, the captured text looks terrible. What settings does she use in SnapZ and how does she import into and export from iMovie to get such good looking tutorials?
