Apple seeds Mac OS X 10.4.8 to developers
Amidst all this Leopard broohaha, it's good to know Apple can still remember 'the rest of us' still using the now old 'n busted Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. MacRumors and AppleInsider are reporting that Apple has seeded a Mac OS X 10.4.8 update to developers for their ninja code skills to scrutinize. The fairly hefty list of changes, fixes and improvements includes: AFP Server, WebCore, LoginWindow, CUPS and CDSASSL, and ImageCapture, AFP, DVD Player, Graphics and Graphics applications, iCal, iPhoto, Mail (thank you!), Microsoft Word & OpenType fonts, Modem usage, Networking, Printing, Safari and USB. Also on the checklist are double reboots, long reboots and improving localization in various areas.MacRumors also notes that this early build tips the scales at 305MB for Intel, and 147MB for PowerPC (10.4.7, by comparison, was 133MB and 64MB), though developer seeds like this typically go on a pretty strict diet before going public.
For now, there's no word or even an ETA on when 10.4.8 might land for the rest of us, so give Apple a break and stop furiously refreshing Software Update, couldya?

One of the reasons that the Intel versions are so big is that Apple is shipping them with both big and little endian versions of many things. They have to do this for Rosette support. While it uses up more hard drive space doing this it probably results in much better performance than trying to convert everything at runtime.

Maybe they'll fix the gross memory leak(s) in Safari!

It'll be nice to finally have a resolve on this Microsoft Word + OpenType Fonts for MacIntel users. It's been a pressing issue that can't wait for the new version of Office or Leopard.

Man, I'm excited for the CUPS update believe it or not.
I am a student, and I also work Tech support for the Macs in the public labs here on campus. We recently installed a system so you can print to our public printers from more or less anywhere - meaning I could print from home, and just go to the Library, sign on to a computer, and click a release button on the webpage, and it'll print. Or from a laptop. Its pretty convinient.
Save for one thing. It works on Windows. It works on *nix. Doesn't work on OSX. Why not? Its lacking certain features in CUPS. Specifically:
"Linux, Solaris, or other UNIX systems can use CUPS as an IPP client. Mac OS X supports IPP but lacks full support for authentication and SSL at this time. This system requires both and therefore Mac OS X is currently incompatible."
Oh, I hope I hope I hope I hope...
