Jobs might deliver a keynote, updated MacBook Pros on September 12th?
Egads, the rumor engine has caught on fire and September 12th is to blame: HardMac cites anonymous sources (i.e. - take it with a grain of salt) that Steve Jobs still won't be present in Paris for the upcoming Apple Expo, but that doesn't mean he can't be on a stage somewhere: the rumor is that Jobs will still give a keynote, but it will be produced in Cupertino and relayed to London, Apple Europe's headquarters (where all the journalists have actually been invited to already). Let's hear it for the powers of iChat A/V.Next on the list of September 12th rumors is that, along with 23-inch Core 2 Duo iMacs, we could also see revised MacBook Pros, possibly even with Core 2 Duo shininess. For this one, HardMac cites a French student who tried to purchase a MacBook Pro online, but was given a 3-5 week shipping window - which typically happens to products in some regions when an update is imminent.
Keep in mind none of this is confirmed, so if Sept. 12th turns out to be not much more than an Aperture update (after all, it is close to Photokina), keep your chin up. Apple's fall season is just getting started.

Firstly, this isn't a keynote address. Keynotes, by definition, open conferences. While Apple Expo Paris starts on the same date, there has been no provision to broadcast, or in any way, communicate Jobs' presentation to attendees.
Rather what we have here is Steve Jobs doing a press briefing. Given the fact he opted not to do this presentation as a keynote address to the Expo, common sense indicates he will announce iTunes/iPod related products, not new computer hardware. He would deliberately defer doing iTunes/iPod announcments in Paris for several reasons.
1. Any movie related download service will doubtlessly be for the US market only (as was the original music service). International sites (i.e. non-US) are still waiting for TV downloads, never mind movies. The international press in Paris would shrug it off as a US service and show only mild interest, whereas a US locale means maximum press coverage to the intended market. Moreover Jobs probably wants to have a few LA based movie execs on stage with him, execs who would not have welcomed travelling to Paris for 5 minutes on stage.
2. Any iTunes/iPod upgrade announcement in Paris would have been heavily overshadowed with references to France's new laws governing music download services. Apple doesn't want their press coverage muddied by this situation as it surely would be.
3. The nature of Apple press briefings of this nature (as opposed to actual keynote addresses) points to one focal point, not a range of products. Expect to hear about a revamped iTunes (adding US movie downloads) and upgraded iPods to use with the new service.

Wow. If they were to put Core 2 Duo's in MacBook Pros, I'd buy one immediately.

Don't forget the special event at the end of September
Apple is to attend Photokina 2006 – this will be the first time the company has attended the Cologne-based photography show that takes place from 26 September to 1 October.
It is possible that the company will be focusing its attention on the next version of Aperture at the show. The UK press has received notification of a special Apple presentation happening at Photokina on September 25.

I wonder if apple will fix the dozen problems they're having with the current mbp's or if they'll continue to ignore them. I'll be holding off until their quality control catches up with their intel transition. I see too many people being screwed with their new and defective mbp's and mb's. I'll stick to my good ol' 800Mhz ibook that has yet to give me a single problem for now.
Which brings up a related point, why doesn't tuaw cover some of the mbp problems that appledefects dot com has been covering? For example, editors of major magazines swearing off apple indefinately due to mbp problems.

If apple were to offer updated MBP's - I will be seriously unhappy. It was annoying enough that they kept upping the processor speeds like minutes after I ordered mine, but to offer some large enhancements just a few months after the originals came out will make early adopters like me look and feel like idiots.

#9: Yea, retards. Nevermind the ExpressCard expandability, full size DVI-out port, FireWire 800 on the 17-inch and pro-level dedicated video card for all that pro-ish stuff that many users need in a notebook...
There are different tools for different jobs. Some are good for you, some are good for others. Perspective, my friend, is a wonderful thing.

I also expect revision to iTunes and something new for iPods.
Mapin (#8) I have a MacBook Pro (I know....I'm a retard but happy one, macbooker) and haven't had one problem. It does get warm but not HOT and no warmer than the Dell laptop I had. My husband ordered the MacBook Pro when it was announced and his is also flawless! I'm glad I didn't wait another second.
PS Also waiting for an iPhone....but alas verizon probably wouldn't carry it and I'm kindda locked in with the family plan, etc.

As for the comment from #8 every model, and every line of computer from every manufacture has defects and problems. Hope over to the unofficial Dell forums, and you'll see dozen of reports of issues with restarts on 2gb of ram machines, try Sony, HP, or any company that generates brand loyalty. You need to relax, Apple has been doing quite a bit as far as quality. I have over 8 laptops in my house now, and by FAR MY MACBOOK is the LEAST BUGGY MACHINE. Most portables always have sleep problems, especially my dell and sony high end laptops.
As far as the MacBook Pros are concerned I can tell you one thing for certain. I bought 2 MacBook Pros, one when they first came out and one last month with gloss.
The first macbook, has the "legendary" whine (only mac users complain, my Dell with the same configuration sounds like a jet engine)
The second macbook with glossy screen (both have 2gb of ram) IS MUCH BETTER QUALITY. No whine, No random reboots, no issues with 2gb of ram. Much, Much better.
I've been lazy with MacBook Pro #1, even though after calling tech support they told me I needed to send it in to have a New Logic board and RAM replaced.
If you have problems with any MacBook Pro return it to APPLE to be repaired. If you get it back and still have ANY problems demand a replacement. Lemon law in the united states, and in other countries there are laws about getting them replaced...
Get yours replaced till it's quiet, and doesn't have reboot issues or any of the other issues you mention. I promise you there are dozens of perfect macbooks. All the ones in the last three months that we bought for the office are perfect expect for 2 out of 50. So quality control is better. We bought 30 they day they were announced and i think we sent 25 of those back for repairs.
WHAT Apple considers (and mac users) a health working machine, is much better than what Dell considers. Try whining about the whine noise from your dell and see if they'll let you send it in LOL. Good luck.
Stop whining about your macbook pro quality control, if you have bad ones do something about it. Contact Apple Executive relations (if you have large quantities) BUT if you aren't happy with the machine don't SETTLE. In the past Apple has even offered to let me switch to a desktop once when I had a bad powerbook.

#9, The 256mb Video Card in my 15" MacBook Pro can drive h.264 1080p HDTV, while X-Plane is running high resolution on my 60" TV at 60fps.
What does your top of the line Macbook do? It can't even output 1080p.. Some people have a need for graphics

Apple's European HQ is Cork, Ireland, not London. Inviting journalists to a site does not qualify it to be a company HQ.

I have tried it with dell, they sent me a new machine no questions asked. Second warranty experience, DVD drive died after six months. No problem, we'll just express courier you a replacement by tommorrow, and you can send the old one back with a prepaid label at your convenience.
When my MacBook was overheating and crashing the Apple Store refused to touch it. I had to threaten the store manager with taking the issue to small claims court to get a resolution. After the hour I wasted listening to denials and trying to get the freaking thing dealt with, you bet I exercised my statutory right to a refund!

i'm as much a mac fanboy as the next person on here, but i sincerely believe apple laptop quality has dropped with this transition, how can anyone deny that? Again, just go to appedefects dot com and look at the issues people are having with mbs and mbps. My buddy is on his 3rd mbp replacement, and they have yet to send him one that is problem free. I'm not comparing apples to dells, i'm comparing them to previous apples, i'll be waiting for at least one revision before transitioning, that's all i'm saying. Sure you can always request a refund if they can't solve your problem, but what if you just want a trouble free mac ? I don't want a dell, i want a mbp that is as trouble free as my 3 year old ibook.

#16: Please keep in mind that problems with brand new products like this aren't plaguing Apple and Apple alone; it's an unfortunate consequence of mass production, and it inflicts most manufacturers, if not all. I've worked with plenty of companies and institutions and organizations, and spoken with plenty others, and we've all run into similar issues with purchasing new generations of hardware like MBs and MBPs.
I think these problems are a bit more publicized and dramatized when they happen to Apple because of its passionate user base and the company's reputation for high quality products and the famous 'it just works' factor.

#19: Don't you think the premium we pay for Apple laptops justifies the closer attention paid to quality control? I don't want it to have as many defects as a dell b/c it is an apple, and their selling point IS "it just works". So the people telling me to just look at the dell forums just don't get it, that's the whole reason i want an apple, so it doesnt act like a dell.
