A Mac on the cover of Playboy
These days you can't turn on a TV, open a magazine or walk down the street without spotting an Apple product or at least an ad for one, and now it seems Apple's expanding popularity has even landed the company on the cover of October's Playboy (Zinio link, semi-safe for work). In the quest to leave their photoshopped mark on everything that adorns the magazine, Playboy (or Apple?) felt the need (or jumped at the chance) to add a personalized touch to what looks like a 12-inch PowerBook, and swapped out the Apple logo for Playboy's (let's see PowerBook laser etching pull this off).TUAW reader Travis Smith tipped us off to the appearance, and from the cover (no, we don't have a subscription) it doesn't look like this is some 'Bunnies love Macs' special issue or anything. Still, it's nice to see Apple getting some love from the Hugh and crew.

Those who have been in the game for a while may remember this cover:

My brother had a subscription to PB and showed me this cover about six years back. I was super excited to see a Mac on the cover of a prominent magazine. The pretty girl didn't hurt, either.

As a former Playboy employee, I'd imagine the art designer liked the look of the PowerBook and used that in the shot. Playboy's legal department then made them take out the Applie logo for fear of getting sued.
Most of the decisions made at Playboy are in an effort to avoid getting sued—generally at the expense of creativity.

A local bank in my area has a commercial running that talks about their online services. There is a person using an iBook, but they put a stickie over the Apple logo. Another sign of Apple's assanine legal department. They would sue somebody over free advertising. Amazing.

Every month the cover of the magazine has the rabbit head design someplace on it. The rabbit is usually hidden, like in the the lace work on a bra or as a design in clitter make up. It's like "Where's Waldo" but for grown ups.

I am a member of PB (for the articles, of course), and they actually have many spreads prominently featuring Apple products. I agree, it probably is a creative decision as they are fine looking machines, but still it's interesting to see a Playboy bunny frolicking with a Mac in the background.
Mind you, I only stumbled upon these photos while going from article to article.

Jeff... dude...

Anonymizing Macs in ads has absolutely nothing to do with Apple suing anyone. This is done because companies like Playboy don't want to jeopardize their relationship with other companies who wouldn't appreciate the free advertising given to Apple. You think Dell would still pay through their nose to have their ads put in Playboy when Apple gets the front page for free? Use your brain...

There was an issue way back in the day with a blue clamshell iBook on the cover.

I'm seeing more and more Macs in the media too-a PowerBook in "Silent Hill," a G5 in "Final Destination 3" (I didn't know a high school chick needed that much computer). I've also seen them in several commercials (the Visa commercial "Running your business your way: Priceless" one comes to mind, I think they're all sitting around the table with PowerBooks). In a lot of them the Apple logo is is either covered up by something or essentially "airbrushed" out all together.
