We all know it is what is on the inside that counts, but Apple's packaging is usually a work of art in and of itself. The new nano box is no exception to that rule. Seen to the right, it is 52% smaller than the previous packaging which should make Greenpeace a little happier. Plus it shows off the iPod nano very nicely.Almost makes me want to get one, but I have my eye on the 80 gig iPod.

I liked the old packaging better. It made it seem like a wrapped gift almost. Much more elegant in my opinion. And what's so green about all that plastic?

I guess they no longer include the iTunes install CD.
I can see a ton of people getting confused about how/where to get iTunes. I pity the Apple Retail employees who have to deal with them.

Aah, Steve's Disney involvement shows. Clear reference to Snow White's glass coffin ;-)

And, that plastic is soooo degradable, right? Cardboard is greener than plastic.
The only way that this iteration is better then shrinkwrap, is this at least you don't need gloves & box cutter to open this package as you have to with so many other electronics.
But for the stores it avoids confusion about which colors are in stock and for the consumer which color they're actually buying.

Just to annoy greenpeace I'm gonna buy ten of 'em and toss the packaging out the car window.
Oh, who am I kidding? I'm going to buy the 80gb iPod and put the box in my closet alongside the boxes from my 6gb mini and 2nd generation 20gb.
Thanks, Dad, for making me into the packrat I am today.

Speaking of new packaging, did anyone else notice Steve's spiffy outfit? That shirt had a collar!

More important for Apple and retailers: the new packaging now allows them to see whether or not the iPod is still in the box, a.k.a. if somebody has stolen it.

well, I wasn't going to buy a nano, but when I heard it came in smaller packaging, I just had to get it!!! [/ searcasm]
But seriously, good point icerabbit. Ah, Sir Not Appearing in this Blog, that is practiacally the whole reason I buy electronics, for the presh-is (definately sp) boxes.
I liked the old cube boxes best, it was like a piece of art or something when you unfolded it seeing what was around the next corner unfolding those things.

These are certainly much less environmentally friendly than the old packages. Shockingly one-dimensional thinking. Anything that uses plastic requires petroleum products to make it. So what energy they may save via shipping may be used to make the packaging.
You'd think Steve would get this. Isn't Al Gore on the BOD?

I noticed Apple hawking their new environmentally conscious minimal packaging. Call me stupid, but wouldn't the heavy-duty plastic used in this packaging probably be more harmful than their previous cardboard? It might be less build, but that plastic's going to be around for the next couple millenia.
