iPod nanos get storage boost, aluminum bodies, and colors

Dare I say, 'Return of the iPod mini?' Apple just revamped their entire line of iPod nanos, and the first thing that strikes you is that they are available in colors. Silver, pink, black, green, and blue though no white. The nanos also have a new aluminum body that makes them even better for jogging and other fitness activities.
What else is new? Brighter screens and longer battery life, Apple claims that the nano will get 24 hours of life out of a single charge.
You can choose from 2GB (silver only, $149), 4GB (silver, pink, green, blue $199), or 8GB (black only, $249) models, and Apple will throw in free laser engraving.
Continue reading for a look at a nano in profile.

Pretty slender huh? And no, this isn't actual size (the nano's smaller).

Sleek! Pity that it still won't take all my music though, and that the 8Gig one is only in black. I want a plain 8gig model!

Please note that there is no discount for students on any of the iPods - at least, from what I've seen as a student @ UMich

Scott -
You may want to clarify the post, the 4GB is available in every color except black.
Not only is the 8GB only available in black, but it's the ONLY one available in black.

On the Irish Education store the only discounted ipod is the new shuffle: €82 instead of €89

iPod mini colors make a triumphant return, yet gold is nowhere to be found.
BUH-bye gold!
(I find it funny how everybody hated the gold one. Poor gold can't get no respect.)

Kudos to Apple! They are letting me return my nano that I bought about 2 weeks ago, ingraved and all, for a 10% restocking fee. They did the same for the iMac I ordered at the same time w/o the restocking fee. Thank you very much Apple! You wouldn't have lost my business, but you did make me happier with you.

I think it's a bad move to actually step BACK in evolution, going back to the ugly design of the iPod Mini, why not keep the sleek-looking iPod Nano as it were? And no white? Come on...

Superjeff - if you read this webpage then why on earth would you have bought a new nano 2 weeks ago - we all knew what was coming

*yawn* it all a remake of the same old same old. Nanos with colours? Been there. Bigger storage space: expected. Games? Trivial. and the ipod shuffle is just the same thing that looks different and different is better. Until Steve ALLOWS us to have the video ipod obviously everyone wants, he's just playing with our wallets. I still haven't bought an iPod because I don't buy what isn't 1) what I want and 2) isn't what it could be. Touchscreens and bluetooth and four inch screens and lets-get-rid-of-all-the-gizmos-and-put-it-all-into-one-device-kind-of-thinking is thinking different and is techonologically possible. Sadly Steve is only catering to one consumer type, those under 25. Sure I want all the media stuff he is currently giving, but as a 30 year old, I also want and need some other stuff too, and small screens and no quickly Apple-smart integration with other aspects of my life just makes the iPod another thing to make me carry around. Sorry Steve, you're just reinventing what you've already done. That sounds to me like: Thinking Same.

"the ugly design of the iPod Mini"
There's no need to get personal. My iPod mini has ridden in my pocket for the last year and a half (bought in April 2005) and has NO visible scratches anywhere on it. And no, I don't use a skin or case to hold it. The nano scratches if you look at it funny. What you call ugly I call beautiful and rugged.

I agree with #8, I too find the new nano design less nice than the previous one. Actually, it is rather ugly. When I read the chatcast from the event I got excited about it all and was looking forward to by a 8G silver nano but I'm afraid it won't happen now. Just too ugly.
Pity, because that apart, it would be perfect for my needs. (yeah, sure, a few mor gigs wouldn't hurt, as ever :) )

So, I have been doing my best at NOT getting an iPod, and not researching them, etc. Thusly, this may be a stupid question: do the nanos have the same gap-less playback that is new to the regular iPods? Did they always have it?
Now that an 8Gb one is out, if it has gapless playback... I think I will finally succumb.

>Rob, don't take it so hard. . .
I love my silver Mini, even bought a second one for when my first crapped out (which it did) so I'm happy to see I can buy a new model and get the same durability I had with the Mini. Has Apple ever made a worst gaffe, making the original Nano's so fragile?

Please tell me this supports gapless playback as the 5G and iTunes 7!
Then apple will have finally given me everything I could want in a music player!
Gapless playback, colour screen, nice interface, small rugged design, perfection at long last, right? :D

I love my Mini, but my old Rio Karma had gapless playback three years ago, also had dynamic playlist creation (add/delete songs as you listen to playlist). Cant understand why Apple took so long to add the gapless feature. Is this a firmware upgrade that will be available to all?

That really is horrificly ugly. Major step backwards.

Yay, I just ordered one :) Had doubts about colour versus gb's- gb's won.

#8: I agree- I never liked the rounded edges of the iPod mini and welcomed the Nano form. Not to mention I must be the only one on the planet that thinks the colors are puke-a-licious. :::BLECK!:::

i dont understand any of the hate for the new design - the mini design was a classic, the nano was a perfect size so now we have the best of both worlds - the people complaining about it are probably the ones who did all the complaining about the scratches on the 1st nano
