iLounge answers top ten questions about the new iPods
The iPod lineup looks completely different from how it looked 2 days ago. You're bound to have a few questions that his Steveness didn't answer during the big event (he tends to focus on the big ticket features). Good thing our iPod obsessed friends at iLounge are on the job. Jeremy Horwitz has compiled the top ten questions that he has been getting about the new iPods and answers them all in this very informative article. Doesn't it just make you want to get a new iPod?

I'd like to know how fast are the transfers in the new shuffle, since it (apparently) connects via the headphone port.

didnt answer my questions, i want to know (out of curiosity) the system of getting music into a shuffle through the minijackk, thats clever isnt it? is it slow? also nano and dock, does it fit? ? ? it should.
i think the ipod (HD) has stayed the same for a number of reasons, the ecosystem of add-ons, the energy a full screen ipod would take playing movies, begger hard drives to fit same form factor as current 30gb model. and there is definatly somekind of mobile osx devise on the horizon, pitched between an ipod and a mac book. my 2cents (or pence as im british lol)

I already wanted a new nano, which is really a new generation of my favorite iPod, the mini. They look great! And 24 hours on one battery charge!!! WOW!
I'd have already placed the order if the things had Firewire capability...but until I replace my 3.5 year-old iMac, I'm stuck with USB 1.1, so no new iPods for me. I'm holding out until Leopard's release to buy a new iMac--hopefully, that's in the first half of next year. And hopefully, my 1.5-year-old iPod mini (with Firewire) will last until then.

iLounge made an interesting comment about how the audio playback time for the 5.5G iPods hasn't changed, but the video playback time has, and a commenter suggested that perhaps the iPods made better use of the backlight. I agree, except that I think it's just about the ability to dim the backlight, rather than anything new in the way the iPod itself handles the backlight, and I bet the "up to" 6.5 hours of video playback (for the 80GB model) assumes that the user has the backlight set to the lowest setting.
That being said, my question goes something like this: since all 5G iPods can now take advantage of dimming the backlight, does that mean that all 5G iPods now also get "up to" 6.5 hours of video playback (or 3.5 hours if you have the 30GB model)? Betcha' that's the case. Go marketing...

When are we going to be able to see Camera RAW files on an iPod?

Updated my 30GB 5th gen last night.
No search function to be found. Not a biggy because honestly that's just irritating as hell to use with a click wheel.
When you rapidly scroll through your albums, songs, artists you DO get the pop up telling you which letter you're on which is quite useful.
New - The screen stays on, dimly lit at lowest brightness setting, while plugged into your computer. This does not occurr when plugged into a wall charger. I assume this is so you can actually see that blinking "Do Not Disconnect" icon in dimly lit environments.
Brightness control is great. If you've ever used a 5th gen in the dark you know that screen can be quite obnoxiously bright. Cheers for that additional control.

It took a while for iTunes to scan my 8000 songs for the gapless playback feature but the result is worth it !!!! I tested it on my Powerbook G4 and my 5G iPod and my old electronic compilations finally sound good, it's impossible to detect when you're switching songs. Great job Apple !
Also I'm glad that I can turn down the brightness of my screen, I'm sure this will improve the battery life (and might explain the extended battery life for the new iPod).
