iLounge dissects 2G iPod nano, posts gory details

Why, iLounge, why? The 2G iPod nano was announced barely two days ago. It still had its entire product cycle ahead of it! So young, so innocent.. and apparently so ripe for the dismantling. The gurus of all things iPod have dissected what looks like a silver 2G iPod nano (though I'm not sure whether it's 2GB or 4GB) for all the world to see.
While the majority of us probably won't get much out of looking at this internal iPod guts pr0n, I can think of one basic lesson we can pass on to the iPod owning luddites of our lives: if they ever, during their experience of owning an iPod, see any of these parts from it - that's a bad thing.

I'm sure this is off topic, but does an iPod photo have gapless playback capabilities? I haven't gotten the new iTunes and I'm wondering if gapless playback is going to work in my 4g (or is it 5g) iPod photo...

While seeing the innards of one's iPod is a bad thing, it's not always that bad. I once dropped my very durable 20 gb iPod with the click wheel. It fell open, exposing its guts to the world. I thought it was doomed, but upon reassembling it, I found it still worked!!
What a good ol' iPod. Time to upgrade to an black 80 gb, though.

They're, not the first and certainly won't be the last. I'm sure Tom's Hardware will have a poke around sooner rather than later...

If it's a silver one, it's a 2GB. The silvers only come in that size.

Scott:
The nano also comes in a 4 GB flavor and silver. So you're wrong.

Wrong. The silver one is available in 2GB or 4GB configuarations.

Sorry, my mistake. I assumed Apple treated the silver 2GB the same way they treated the black 8GB. It would be a whole lot less confusing that way. I stand corrected.

Photo #33 says it's the 2GB version...
I'd hope they wouldn't spend that much extra money massacring a 4GB (look at all those scratches on the aluminum and the plastic endcaps are probably worthless now) -- doing it to a 2GB is bad enough!

When Apple releases a new product, the engineers open up what's called a "capture" or "EEFA" as it's known internally. This capture is for ANY hardware failure. So you could buy a brand new something something, smash it with a rock, and take to back to the genius bar to have it swapped out under the capture procedure. I would not recommend this unless you have an "in" at your local genius bar (most genius don't know how to process it). If you came to me, I would swap it. But fact is, most geniuses are jerks and virgins.

What empty socket is that in picture 16?

Kai: Looks like it attaches to the assembly in picture 24 (audio jack & click wheel).
